  1. So we traded a former 2nd round Dman for a 2nd and 18 year old former 3rd rounder

I guess that’s a win and helps clear the log jam or adding assets to offset a bigger move?

  2. silvio_dante

Weird trade. Take Gibson in the 2nd last year, he seemed to have a fine year, trade him for a 2nd this year.

I mean, it’s fair value, he didn’t exactly boost his value with his season, but it’s still weird.

  3. SubmissionDenied

Someone tell me how to feel.

I feel Gibson wasn’t exactly one of our top prospects. A 2nd round pick could be used to move up or for another trade. No idea who Kiiskinn is.

  4. JeremyEMT

Stevie is cooking something with that 2024 second.

    No reason otherwise.

  5. KingdokCAN

We lose a Gibson and maybe we gain another later on?

Edit: Also damn he played in the Liiga already as a 18 year old? That seems pretty good, no?

Works for me haha. Can’t have too much of an opinion, basically get to rinse and repeat with the 2nd round this year (Gibson was a 2nd rounder last year), while picking up a 3rd rounder from last season too. Gibson was signed and Kiiskinen wasn’t yet. Otherwise hadn’t had much time to form a strong opinion on Gibson yet.
Maybe Trotz really likes Gibson, or maybe the wings were eh on Gibson, wanted to clear a logjam (he’s a RD though), and get another shot at a 2nd round pick this year.

But my other, more important, trade analysis is that Jesse Kiiskinen is a way cooler name

  7. duelingdog

The blockbuster move we’ve been expecting has arrived.

  8. Best I can make of it is that the Red Wings feel confident that ASP will eventually take that 2nd RD spot behind Seider.

  9. transportguy161671

Got draft capital to use elsewhere. Nothing else makes sense here. He’s not trading last years 2nd round pick for another 2nd unless he wants to use that pick in another trade.

  10. drankpisss

Dang I was getting excited for Gibson. I thought he’d be the 3rd pair RD in a couple years but I’ll take it. Harmless trade as of right now.

From Scott Wheeler back in February regarding Kiiskinen, he had him as Nashville’s 10th best prospect and Nashville as the 8th best prospect pool.

Finland’s captain at times with their U18 team last year, Kiiskinen really impressed me at the fall 2022 Five Nations in Plymouth, where he was in on eight of their 12 goals, led the team in points and shots, and showed both skill and a respectable work rate. He was also one of the more productive players in Finland’s top junior league (which included a 20-shot hat-trick performance) and had real chemistry with countryman Jesse Nurmi on a line internationally throughout last year. This season, though he didn’t make the Finnish world junior team (he’ll be a top-nine winger at the Ottawa tournament next year), Kiiskinen was Finland’s best player at the U20 Five Nations in February, has played almost exclusively in Liiga this season and has lit up Finland’s junior level in brief loans.

He’s dangerous on the flank and point on the power play because of his shot (both a quick wrister and the one-timer on his off-wing) but also a willingness to use his shot as a decoy into a pretty compelling passing game. He plays hard and gets off the flank to finish plays around the net. He has a pro frame and strong balance on his skates playing through bumps. But he’s not a quick north-south skater (due in large part to short, almost stunted stride extensions) even though he evades defensemen with cuts and stop-ups to change directions and has looked a step quicker this year. He’s also got a pro shot and deft handling skills, with a knack for having the puck in good spots a lot and a confidence flipping the switch to attack mode. That includes skill at catching and giving saucer passes and good dexterity around the net on tips and redirects. He doesn’t turn 19 until the end of August either, giving him good runway to become a productive Liiga player and then come over to North America to try to work into the call-up conversation in the AHL eventually. My only complaint about his game is that it can lack pace at times. This is the point in Nashville’s list where the players’ odds of making it get a little longer but I’m a fan of his game and felt he was a worthwhile third-round pick.

Damn, I was really excited for Gibson.

It’s fine though, we have a glut of defensive prospects and we need to move them while they have value. Especially for forward talent.

Nice work Stevie, hopefully this kid develops well!

  13. cutyourhair

Giving this trade a cautious Hmmm/10.

Wouldn’t think we’re in a position to trade RHD who looks decent, but I know nothing about the Finish kid, and we’ll see where that bonus 2nd rounder ends up.

Edit: ok, after the Walman Update, this trade stinks too.

  14. coltron57

Kiiskinen sounds kind of interesting. Leadership, ~~speed~~motor, 200′ effort. Pretty common traits in acquisitions under Yzerman. Perhaps he could be a Darren Helm type for us.

  15. haight1500

When I first saw the post I read that we traded for john Gibson of the ducks… damn…

  16. LGRW_Sparty88

I was hopeful that Gibson’s progression was going well and he was a right shot, but we also need wingers and it looks like he’s had a decent stretch in Liiga for a young guy.

  17. VHDLEngineer

I wasn’t a fan of the Gibson pick when it happened, so I guess I’m cool with this.

    Essentially 42 for 53 and 68.

  18. BLaRowe10

Oh fuck yeah. Kiiskinen is the best prospect not in the NHL in my opinion and Gibson’s best days are behind him

(I am a fan of Gibson and have no idea who Kiiskinen is)

  19. Wingnut17

RHD or not he was far down our defensive depth. Stevie cooking a package of picks to move up draft!

  20. HercHuntsdirty

Pretty nice return, Gibson is a big RHD so no surprise there

  21. MajorasShoe

I liked Gibson a lot last season. But when you look at the D Prospects we have right now, he’s not a top prospect in any way. Getting a second back feels like it’s leading to another move. Kiiskinen probably never makes the NHL but Gibson probably won’t either. And even if he did, we were probably always trading him if he has any value, and there’s nothing to say that his value doesn’t drop next season playing against men.

  22. non_target_eh

Could we be using this 2nd round pick to dump Holl’s contract?! Please let this be the case.

  23. Problemwoodchuck

That’s odd. I wonder if there was a problem signing Gibson or if Nashville just liked his game that much.

  24. ElleCerra

After the Rutger McGroarty news I think teams are wary of NCAA players who may not have immediate playing time in the NHL when they’re done with college. There’s no clear path for him to play big minutes soon so they probably figured they’d get value for him sooner rather than later. Got a forward prospect out of it too.

  25. SpiritBamba

Gibson legit had a ton of promise, he has a solid year. He’s 6’3 right handed and liked to use the body. No clue why we did this. I’ll take a proven asset over a mystery box every time. Only will make sense if we use the 2nd in a trade but then we should’ve just used Gibson. And a winger under 6 feet. Whatever. Not a big fan of this one.

  26. My only sadness is that Gibson is basically from Windsor. He’s a hometown guy. But so is Ekblad, I guess. Can’t catch ’em all.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if we had Kiiskinen high on our list last year. He sounds like a Wings type player. Hard working, high motor, two-way, potentially hidden upside.

  27. blind2141

Maybe we can take that 2nd and use it to fire holl into the sun

  28. doubeljack

I maybe can explain why Gibson was the player moved. We drafted him in the second round last season, at 42nd overall. Nashville had the 43rd overall pick. Was Gibson their guy?

This may be a situation where Nashville really wanted Gibson and pried him away from us by giving up more value. We’re pretty stacked with young talent on D.

  29. Environmental_Arm_27

Something to consider in the calculation of this move is how raw the left side of the Grand Rapids team will be without Ed and Albert. With Wallinder, Shai, and Viro likely to be the focus (for development) moving Gibson allows for GR to bring in a vet to provide some stability.

Additional importance considering the steps of improvement Cossa took, would like to get some stability in front of him early next season. Also seems like there is a possibility that Gylander might be the backup, which makes it even more important to shore up the D in front of him.

Certainly not saying this was a primary consideration, but it might have contributed to the decision to move Gibson.
