It makes sense. It also makes sense that Utah would be a possible trade destination for Mikheyev. They have a lot of cap space and they'd be looking to not only accumulate draft picks for the future but bring in a speedy, defensively responsible 3rd liner as well as a marquee player to sell their new fans on the idea that they're a serious team.
Marner would be a good fit with Utah. It's not as if they are gonna make the playoffs.

He's based in New York. If there's any truth to this, it's possible the Rangers or Islanders made offers for Marner which were rebuffed and they are leaking elements of a deal. Both teams had lots of recent speculation swirling about Marner. Even if they never made a deal, not uncommon for GMs to want to eliminate speculation about themselves by leaking to random journalists opposing team's deals.
