Jeremy Roenick said he was “5 seconds away” from signing a contract with the Red Wings in 2001 but chose the Flyers instead. That Detroit team won the Cup. Roenick never did.

I wonder if we would’ve signed Hull and Robitaille still if we did land Roenick.

  2. Would that have led to a line of Hull, Datsyuk, and Roenick? Datsyuk would have had 120 points since poor Boyd Deveroux couldn’t buy a goal no matter how good he got set up

Okay Roenick. You keep telling yourself that.

  4. Its easy to make a decision in hindsight. We all will have similar choices when it comes to our careers. Should we go to Company B if Company A is treating us well but underpaying us by 10k a year? Only to find out Company B is toxic and we end up falling flat on our faces.

At the time, Roenick made a decision that he felt was going to give him the best chance at a championship. It just never worked out. I have said this before and I will say it again, winning a championship is never a certainty. If you are going to bet if a team wins the cup, or the field (everyone else), then you always take the field. Heck, at the beginning of the season, everyone thought Colorado and Carolina were going to win the Stanley cup. Edmonton, Dallas, and Vegas followed. Edmonton was the only one who made it to the finals, and they weren’t even the top pick.

Who knows what would have happened if we signed Roenick. Personally, with the talent we had on that roster, its probably safe to bet we would have won a championship with him.

It would have been tough rooting for Roenick on the Wings, at least for me. Glad it didn’t happen.
