“Winner Take All” Stanley Cup Finals Game 7: Oilers vs. Panthers NHL P-B-P/Color w/Alec Nava 6-24-24

Game Story: It took me some time to soak everything in alongside Alec Nava but here is the writeup and coverage of Game 7. The Florida Panthers (hashtag#TimeToHunt) did it. The OEG Inc. (hashtag#LetsGoOilers) almost shocked the world. Here is an expanded look and thank you!

Series Recap:

Game 1: FLA W 3-0: Sergei Bobrovsky activates his inner Hasek/Brodeur and records a 32-save shutout. Hyman, R-N-H, and Adam Henrique get flat out denied on breaks and in-close chances. Florida is outshot badly, and maybe played its worst game and still won convincingly. Verhaeghe backhand and Rodrigues off a unreal Bennett pass that goes through the legs of Nurse and beats the defense. Draisaitl misses a chance across the goal mouth. Eetu Luostarinen (EN). What do you say if you are Kris Knoblauch? Edmonton played a solid game. Can they repeat the performance and win handily? Stuart Skinner (L, 15 Saves). Tell the story of his blades from NHL Network recap, tendency to get low, what the Bruins tried to do.

Game 2:FLA W 4-1: Draisaitl and Nurse, stupid plays by EDM, after surviving the first. This was an effort that can be seen through the rearview mirror and I’m not sure that the picture can be depicted as anything else than reality. Mikkola GP 97 Playoff Games 2G 4A vs. 3G in EDM. EDM: Ekholm. Niko Mikkola, Rodrigues (2) and Ekblad. Very nasty game, Barkov and Nurse didn’t return. Luostarinen and Ekblad did. Does Draisaitl get suspended? Sergei Bobrovsky (W, 18 Saves) Skinner (L, 24 Saves) not his fault. Foegele knee on knee. Stenlund, speared, then hit by Desharnais. Of note no suspensions, Florida plane delayed by flooding heading into tonight. I want to see what Barkov does. It’s a win now or nothing for EDM.

Game 3: FLA W 4-3: Self-Inflicted mistakes from the Reinhart, Tarasenko and Bennett goals by Edmonton end up costing them what could have been a victory in the late rally. Barkov gets the GWG in what was 4-1 after two periods. EDM: Foegele (Breakaway); Broberg and McLeod all score. Of note, still no goals for McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman and Bouchard. Kane is done for the series with the hernia. That’s a big missing piece. Bobrovsky takes the win stopping 32 of 35 shots. Skinner gets hung out to dry and takes another loss managing 19 saves on 23 shots. It’s a matter of when for FLA. As this would be the first Stanley Cup in franchise history! But I have to ask, is this the ceiling for EDM? How close are they really?

Game 4: EDM W 8-1: Felt much like the COL victory over TB in Game 2 in which it was 7-0 two years ago. Bobrovsky pulled, making just 11 saves in the loss. Dylan Holloway (2); Janmark (SHG), Henrique, McDavid, Nurse, R-N-H, McLeod all score. Odd-man rushes of every variety. Skinner masterful as he made 32 saves, and a robbery during the first period. I think EDM needs another multi-goal effort like this to create doubt. FLA just throw it away.

Game 5: EDM W 5-3: McDavid is the first player in playoff history with back-to-back four-point games. Able to skate through the whole team and set up Perry at half-speed for a goal. Brown (SHG); Hyman, Perry (PPG); McDavid (2, EN). FLA: Tkachuk, Rodrigues, Ekman-Larsson. Tkachuk snipe, and unreal goal line save. Bobrovsky 19 of 23 in the loss. Skinner 30 of 33 in the victory. McDavid now –100 favorite to win the Conn Smythe no matter how long the series goes. FLA six PENS, back-to-back SHG given up. Seems like Game 7 is a formality.

Game 6: EDM W 5-1: It’s an utterly lifeless performance by the Cats with the exception of Barkov and Mikkola. It didn’t matter that Barkov had a goal on the offsides overturn either. Bobrovsky takes the loss in a 16 of 19 performance. Skinner only has to stop 20 of 21 in the victory. Oilers win the game and the stat of 18-5 on takeaways is very glaring. The Panthers looked declawed and out of hope entirely. McDavid needed no points. Foegele, Henrique, Hyman, then McLeod and Nurse with the (EN).

Game 7: Lead in to tonight. FLA has never won a Stanley Cup. Lost in 1996, got swept by the Colorado Avalanche and lost in five games last year (2023) to the Vegas Golden Knights. EDM: The last Candian team to win the Stanley Cup was the Patrick Roy led Montreal Canadiens in 1993. The Oilers last won it all in 1990 against the Boston Bruins in five games. This will be one of the greatest upsets in sports history in a reverse sweep fashion. Have some planned words after the cast for EDM and FLA.
