Minisode – The Jake Walman Trade Mystery

In a move that shook the Detroit Red Wings fanbase, Steve Yzerman sent Jake Walman and a second round pick in 2024 to the San Jose Sharks for… nothing? We try and put a reason behind it and clam the tensions. Plus updates on the trade of Andrew Gibson and the rumors on Ducks goalie John Gibson.

  1. I'll be honest. Before we acquired Ullmark, I was hoping the Sens could acquire Gibson. I still think he's a really good goalie stuck on a bad team. His contract however sucks, and Anaheim not wanting to retain money makes it almost impossible for the Ducks to get a decent return.

  2. Logically speaking? No. Johansson does not have to be on the roster next season. We, as fans, might want him on the roster because we don't want to lose him to waivers, but he doesn't have to be on the roster. As for Gibson? No. I'll pass.

  3. It's interesting now that SJS have Klim Kostin, Givani Smith, Filip Zadina and Jake Walman; its too bad they didn't take Holl too.

  4. I don’t have much confidence in the “Yzerplan”. Too many misses lately. Kane was the only thing I loved.

  5. It’s far more indicative that something was sour between the team and Walman. Two years in a row he was scratched at the deadline; and he became expendable with Edvinsson taking his minutes.

  6. This has gotta be for the #1 pick tomorrow. the pick they never got. We have a ton off assetts and future round 1 picks. Sharks aren't ready 4 Celebrini. We are. we have an overage in good youth. It could work well 4 san jose. San Jose could grab 2 1st rounders for the next 3 yrs.

  7. I think Petry and Holl were not moved for a couple of reasons, first I don't think anyone wanted them and they are trying to clear room on the LD. Chiarot deal would require you to move a first to move on from that contract and he was actually serviceable last year. Matta is a good third pair D-man that can also sit if they don't have room for him. I was one of the minority which was frustrated with Jake's play last year, he didn't work hard in the corners and he often had to use his speed and a diving play just to try and save breakaway's because he was often out of position or misread the play. Simon and Albert will be much better defensively than Walman and Ghost. Just my opinion.`

  8. Just FYI, the Sharks are already retaining on 3 contracts from prior trades for at least 1 more year (Brent Burns to Carolina, Erik Karlson to Pittsburgh, and Tomas Hertl to Vegas). They cannot retain on a contract until the Burns contract expires.

  9. I have a scenario that would make the Walman situation make sense. Here we go: The Wings waive Justin Holl for the purpose of a buyout, and San Jose claims him. If that happens, the whole Walman trade makes sense. I mean, Yzerman didn't even try to waive Walman first. I have to think Jake wouldn't have cleared waivers. If he did, then okay.. maybe we as fans just overvalued him. Idk.. if we waive Holl and San Jose grabs him, it makes sense.

  10. We need another legit top 6 center. I could see us clearing space for stamkos. Better than point a game, plays center, 40 goal scorer, works the PP. We have a hard time once larkin goes down. A second center who puts up points is what we need and yzerman has a history with him.

  11. I don’t get why “can’t play on the top pair” suddenly equals “contract dump candidate”? So he’s having trouble with the toughest deployment in the cap era? Why not move him down the lineup? There were better contract dump candidates so it still doesn’t make sense to me.
