  1. I think Guentzel gets maybe 8-9 million. He's a point a game player even without Crosby as he proved with Carolina. A 2 time 40 goal scorer. He lacks defensive awareness though. But the offense makes up for that. Just put him with a good defensive center like Crosby or Aho.

  2. I liked Mang. I just thank God that godforsaken Markstrom is gone. I would've traded him to Siberia for used jock straps after that Oilers series a couple of years ago but that's just me.

  3. Honestly, I feel like this is a good trade for both teams. I think Mangiapane needed a change of scenery, and he has room and potential to grow as a Capital.

And at the same time, I think Calgary brought in enough goal scoring talent last year, plus they have some good goal scoring talent ready to move up from the AHL, that I don't think Mangiapane's goal scoring capabilities will be missed too much. The first year might see some growing pains, but I think within two years Calgary should see those goals back.

  4. We can't pay big Z $5mil for being a number 4-6th dman. The problem is that you can't play him too high up for too long because then he's prone to making mental mistakes. I think $4.5-4.75mil times four years is decent for big Z. Maybe someone will randomly pay him $5-6mil/season on July 1st…

  5. The Guentzel contract will be worth it in 2 trades and at least one retention but whoever signs him this season is set for a rebuild after the gamble. Looking at you Utah.

  6. I loved Jake during his time with the Pens but holy cow he's not a $10M/year player. I think the max he could get is $8.5M but I don't know who pulls a trigger on a deal like that. Maybe he heads to Seattle?

  7. 3 million is too much to pay a 3rd pairing guy, even someone you're familiar with and like.

  8. I can absolutely see Guentzel hitting $10 million per, especially if he accepts a shorter term.

How many wingers in the league would you put ahead of him? Three or four? How many of them are free agents on Monday?

Figure he's staying in Carolina, but he can afford to go wherever he wants. A few teams are big game hunting, and he's the top prize.

  9. Conroy is getting rid of a load of bad contracts and freeing up cap space. Hopefully they wonā€™t overpay in the free agent market. In Connie I trust.

  10. Jake Guentzel has played alongside one of the best hockey players in the world since the beginning of his NHL career. Not taking anything away from him, but could he be a little overvalued thanks to who he's played with? Does he hit 40 goals again without Crosby feeding him sick passes?

  11. With raised team caps on the horizon, I fear GMs could go nuts in free agency. That 10 mil for Guenzel might not be far off.

  12. Capitals have decided to cling on to mediocrity I see. Another one of those teams that push the rebuild back for too long.

  13. Guentzel will get way overpaid because the so-called "most in demand" free agent every year gets way overpaid.

  14. I subscribed today because I appreciate your passion for this wonderful game šŸ’ Thanks for your efforts to keep us updated!

  15. That's why I can't get invested into the NHL so much – not even 2 or 3 years gone and all of your favourite players from a team are already scattered all around the continent. There's so much movement going on you've got no chance to grow attached to a team the same way as in, say football (vel 'soccer'). At least if you don't have a club in your area šŸ™‚

  16. @shannon, What do you think of Gostisbehere for Canucks? Need a PP dman. Zadorov asking basically the same price as Shayne.

  17. Guentzel gets 500 yr and three trillion from Espoon Pallo Sadosts. My local team. Another sport all together but who would not sign to a 500 year deal?

  18. Guentzel is a really good player can score you some goals but if I were a GM I wouldn't give more than 7mil/yr

  19. Its good to see Calgary begin to tear it all down. Just clean house. Teams a total disaster and hasnt done anything exciting in 2 decades.

  20. Hey THG, I was wondering if you could do a video explaining the player assistance program and how trades work in it. Along with the stages. Could be a useful video for people who are curious.

  21. Something that I feel like is getting missed with the Guentzel talks is that Carolina can give him 8 years whereas everywhere else can only do 7 years. We have to remember that even if the Canes only pay him something like 7.75 million per year for 8 years, that would be the equivalent of him making 8.8 million per year on a 7 year deal somewhere else. So Carolina might seem like they are lowballing if they offer him under 8 million, but if they are offering him the full 8 year term it kind of evens out. Hopefully they can get him locked up.

  22. As a Hurricanes fan, I'm worried what the Guentzel deal will mean for us retaining other players and what it would mean for us long term, because he's not going to be worth it the full 8 years like some alternatives (Necas) for that deal would. And Guentzel alone doesn't replace the players we'd lose to make that work

  23. As a kraken fan, I still have a small grudge on Mangiapane because of his cross-check on McCann and the 1 game suspension that the DoPS gave him.

  24. Anything more than 7 million per year is too much for Guentzel, but GM's are st00pid and overpay for players all the time. This won't be any different. He'll get around 8.5, but again, it's gonna be too much and we'll be talking about it in the next couple seasons. Just my $0.02
