Did the Bruins overpay for Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov?

Did the Bruins overpay for Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov?

opening minutes of free agency today your thoughts Mass so I’m more interested in zadorov than I am in lindol that felt like a foregone conclusion they needed a center they got him he they paid him handsomely it’s almost $8 million a year and so I I don’t think he’s worth that but I don’t think they had a choice they clearly lack a first line Center or top six center I you know look just going on the profile of the player and the hockey fans out there are going to have to tell me if I’m wrong but going on the profile of the player I look at lindol and I say I think he’s better suited if he’s your second Center not your first but whatever again the market is what it is the Bruins and have a choice the defenseman 66 240 I looked him up online he mashes people to no end absolute freaking Bruiser he punishes people it’s exactly what they need on the back end my only question is is there another Domino to fall does this mean the end of hampus Lindholm it’s what I thought maybe but I’ve been disabused of that notion okay well the other Domino to fall now is can you get your golender signed long term like that seems to be the missing piece for I know we’ll get to that but for these signings yeah this so Ma you put out this video the zadorov he’s mean like this is the one guy I’m looking at like big tough looks like there could be some offensive upside too but they could use someone like this with some real meanness he hunts people yeah I mean again now I just watched like an 8 minute highlight video of his biggest hits so that’s a colle C of hits over a period of time it’s always dangerous but based on these sorts of hits he hunts them he he waits for people to be vulnerable and then buries them then there’s one of Vander Kane where he absolutely knocks him into next week Kan gets so pissed off he gets up and starts hacking him two-handed cross checks to the lower spine cuz this guy’s 66 sounds beautiful I know isn’t it exactly what they need well Vinnie just put up the two photos of ly Holm and zor and look at zorov without his helmet on he’s got like a mean looking scar on his chin that’s a that’s a scar on a face you wouldn’t of a guy you wouldn’t want to mess with he’s a big Angry Russian monster is what he is I don’t know if he can play I don’t know how fast he is you know again it’s but they could use that kind of toughness he’s had years where you know he looks like he gets 20 points he’s not a high-scoring guy but uh he punish his people oo like I get excited just watching the first 30 seconds over was like oh this guy’s awesome and M you mentioned ly Holm and the the money was big it’s the largest free agent deal that Sweeney’s made since he’s been the GM which is 7 years 7.75 yeah seven yep 7 7 years 7.75 that’s more than the back of signing in 2016 okay how do you feel about that one Mass so uh again I think it’s too high I mean i’ say too high in terms of his value do I think he’s an $8 million player 775 no I don’t but I think he fits what they want he’s supposed to be a two-end guy plays the whole length of the ice and he coming off a bad year but still got his money and they’re so desperate at the position I’m not telling you I wouldn’t have done it by the way because if I were them I would have it’s too important a team in this town too important a franchise in the league for them to just throw their arms up and go we’re going to go with Charlie Coyle and Pavo zaka as our top two centers for the next three years you can’t do it they’re not good enough with those two guys there they’re not Elias home at 7even time 8 or seven times just under eight or or Steven Stam Coast at four time8 o stamp Coast yeah I would take stamp Coast there hasn’t been really any drop off in his productivity look at his numbers from last year he’s still playing really well I know the age is up there but I would take Stephen stampco Elias slome is a is a better bet uh because of age age for one he’s 29 Stam Coast is 34 and he’s probably better all three zones than stamp Coast although Stam Coast when he applies himself I don’t think is any slouch in his own end uh Lind Holmes a better Faceoff guy better in his own end younger okay lot more Runway with Elias slome than Steven SOS Stephen stos would have been fun oh great Sam stos more fun and he he still scored 40 goals last year for Pete’s sake so it’s not like he’s you know uh completely yesterday’s news on the back nine certainly but that would have given you a little bit of bump there that would have given you a pop Stephen Samco I’m not telling you they should have done it or not I’m just let’s just face facts oh would have been fun Stam Coast would have been a little more fun they love they love the profile of a guy like uh lindol though so Lind lindol folks is really just an offbrand Patrice berson just about the exact same size right shot excellent Faceoff guy not an elite offensive player although he did score 42 goals a couple years ago in category 42 goals Patrice berson’s career-high in goals he never got to 40 so berson got to 30 once twice you know he Bon got to 30 goals a handful of times Lind Holm done got to 42 in 2022 uh Lind Holm is a selky consideration although he’s never really gotten close he was uh he was second I’m sorry he was second in the SEL voting in 2022 that might have been behind berson for all I know so he he was second to I believe it was berson in 2022 uh yes he was so uh lindome was second to berson two years ago in selky voting he’s gotten selky votes four times in his career he’s I’d call him a 20 goal scorer he got to 15 last year it was 22 the year before 42 that year in Calgary somehow if you average it all out he comes out to about 25 a year okay so maybe I’m I’m him a little bit so good offense great Faceoff guy three Zone player you’ll you’ll like him he’s like okay so but the outbut is so he’s just a better version of Charlie Coyle uh zaka is a left shot centerman but you know you get it like he’s just a soup upup version of those guys he’s somewhere between Charlie Coyle and Patrice berson is that good enough no I mean so this is again this is my problem I think he’s like I would call him a second line Center and then there’s no shame in that he’s a good player based on everything I’ve read and so and and you’re not the first person to say to me that he’s an Offman B I don’t think he’s ever been an Allstar was he an allar once not that I see in 2022 as10 what does that mean got to be Allstar 10 yeah he was on the All-Star team yeah okay so but I don’t know what that 10 means but either way maybe the 10th player pick 10th in voting I don’t know explain yourself hockey reference either way so been in the league uh 11 12 years been an All-Star only once so it’s like he’s a really nice player but it’s just that no he’s a b or B+ he’s a nice player classic Bruin yeah classic Bruin’s a good way to put it B orb plus but he’s also one of the top players that was available in free agency this year so there to be commended for that like I I wased this what are you supposed to do yeah you you have the money you have the need and he’s easily the I want to say easily cuz you could debate him or Stam Coast but he was one of the top two centers on the board and then went and got him yeah like you should feel good about that you should feel good about it yes I mean this is a team but it’s not perfect when talking along these lines about spending and whatnot the the the worry you have now with the Bruins is that they overspend it’s crazy how it’s completely flipped on its ear in the last uh whatever 20 years but it has it’s like now the issue is oh that’s too much oh that’s too much oh you gave them too much now you have too much on the they overspend which is a total turn from what we grew up with with the Boston Bruins but it’s the same thing with these guys and and to me it’s not so much the overspending as it is what’s the ceiling and the team needs more ceiling these guys really improve the floor and so like they’re going to be a solid playoff team a solid contending team a solid top 10 team in the league like these guys you know I think solidify the Bruins spot or the place in the top 10 in the league how they how does that get them to the next level I don’t know I mean it’s a good question now look they’d have to win it in in a little bit like they did back in 2011 when basically you know one through 20 they were uh you know a really good team that was able to wear people down with how they played right and while their goalie was played at the next level correct so that’s going to have to be their formula and so I’ll tell you look I want to see that I told you I want to see the defenseman because I I think he’s going to be harder to play against than what they’ve had so you know the next time Matthew kachu or the Florida Panthers want to Barrel in on the net and for check are they going to think twice about it if Mount zadorov is back there the angry Russian monster because it feels to me like he is going to punish people if they get in his area you know if if lindol hampus lindol your existing left shot defenseman just didn’t suck so bad the last couple of years and just played to the level that that he did in Anaheim when he first got here you’d look at the Bruins top four and go that’s pretty good that’s okay macavoy again if all these guys were just what they should be makoy uh hampus Lindholm zadorov Carlos a fine fourth guy like that’s okay that’s really not bad and you look at laide coming up behind him like there’s a little bit of Youth there coming behind him I don’t mind it’s like it’s not a bad sounding depth chart there on defense if they just would play to what they are yeah hey look I think I’m saying that to both makoy and hampus LOM I think it might have gotten significantly better depending on how they shake it out because your left side now is this guy Lind home in as you said lorai it’s pretty good not bad it’s pretty good if they just don’t suck like stop sucking is what I would say to hampus Lindholm I just think they they’ve been right but you know in theory now you could I don’t want to say you’re going to play him in your third pairing because you won’t but I think there’s less have asked of him now you know so but like that I guess the only thing I’ll say is like what would you rather have them done and it’s like one of these spots where there isn’t like I don’t I’ve said this a million times I don’t want them tanking and like no I want like another team to build through the middle because a lot of teams build through the middle and are successful that’s how I want to build any team in any sport frankly build through the middle which is what they’re doing uh the only thing I would say is like I would have taken a big hockey trade I would have I I would not have had Charlie McAvoy un touch or and no one’s Untouchable on this team to get me a Brady kachuck or that next that you think you could be that next level guy to really change who you are like that’s like the only thing I would say I would rather them have done but that all felt pipe dreamy because I’m with you on that like moving makoy for again Brady kachuck or like a big you know upheaval Type move like that sure but this to me is a good 1B like I was really surprised by these two moves I mean I feel like their identity has changed a little yeah they got rid of some pusses debras is gone Heinen’s gone Heinen Gone forart Gone grizzl gone like adios I’m good bye I mean they feel grindier to me than they they were yesterday it’s going to totally uh not totally but largely change the look of the I mean Coy or zaka plays the wing maybe I don’t know I I I thought zaka was one of the more underperforming players they had in the entire post he didn’t wake up till the very very end uh at Center and so like maybe zaka gets out of this gets out of the middle Coyle but then again I want Cole on the third line not the second I don’t know they got to short that out but lindol makes I’ll say lindol makes zaka and Coyle make more sense to me they’re not Topline guys no their depth down the middle is better yeah so that that makes sense the defense group fills out with this guy literally and figuratively like I like it they had the money to spend they had chance to get better they went and got better they beat teams to the punch overspent were aggressive is’t that what we want from the Bruins yes yeah the thing you should you don’t feel great about it because I’ll tell you why cuz they didn’t have a choice mik well it’s also this show they no no but they didn’t have M they didn’t have a choice they painted themselves into the corner into a corner where they had to go out and pay for a guy who’s not worth that contract and again I’m not dumping on the player he’s good but at least they’re spending money on the guys that are again you look at the list the guys names at the top of the list it’s not like oh you got to scroll down be like who are these hacks that they signed you know they they’re getting no he was at the top of the list but it’s not like you know it was but even zadorov has looked at as one of the better defenseman that was available this this off season so I’m I’m good with it this guy’s not an $8 million player that’s all I’m saying but they didn’t have a choice you know they they’ve screwed up their system so badly they had no choice that’s what the sin is if you want to focus on the sin but then okay I’ll give you the counter to that though they trade away all their draft picks well you get to the trade deadline two years ago you have the best team in hockey what does everyone say go for it add g go get the cup you’re the best team in hockey so they give up a first they get puszi they give up a first they get orlov they give up these first exactly what we wanted them to do so like where’s the like but but that doesn’t mean you have to do it every year and that doesn’t mean your drafts have to always suck well that is fair if you like that clip check out more videos from felger and Maz here for more 1. I looked him up on line, for fuck sakes you call yourself a sports reporter. Maybe watching sports will help. What a joke. How do american watch these clowns

  2. Was barely an overspend, we maybe spent 775k over on lindholm, and zadorov was a good deal, christ do you guys know anything about hockey, we got so much better today it’s not even funny, between what we added swayman, potsy coming back, and why the hell would we put coyle on the 3rd line when he had a great year last year and played well as the 2c, potsy will be there one day if he keeps progressing like I think he will, but for now you run,
    Zacha-lindholm-pasta
    Marchy-coyle-geekie
    Merkulov-potsy-Freddy
Brazeau-Beecher-open that last winger spot is pretty well open to any of our young guns that are ready for the next move and on d we’re stacked.
    Mcavoy-zadorov
    Carlo-lindholm
    Peeke-lohrei
Wotherspoon we’re going to be just fine better than fine

  3. I don't think Zadorov is worth 30 million. He is a defense defenseman that can score occasionally. I'm not a big fan of more Russian players coming to the USA. I'd like to find out if he is a Putin supporter.

  4. Watching the 3 of you sitting there trying to analyze hockey is like watching a bunch of monkeys playing on a computer.

  5. Mason Lorhie will sit and develop on the 3rd pair and grow into our (hope) D1 left shot aside from Charlie. He’ll get better match ups and complement Peek well. This isn’t the end of hampus. This give mason time. pastas contract was the biggest contract sweeny has given out. 90 million of 8 years. Elias is younger and they’re solidifying their core for the next 5-6 years. Now they’re allowing room for baby Bs to step up and take a spot on the roster. I used to like the sports hub.

  6. Things to Love:

The Bruins got much bigger, faster, physical and nastier on the the 4th line not too mention on their back end and there's no doubt they are a better team now than they were last year

Zadorov will make the Bruins bigger and tougher to play against while also giving them the best Top 6 depth on defense in the NHL (objectively) while also allowing Lohrei to have some pressure taken off of him as he develops further

Elias Lindholm will also make the Bruins tougher to play against, he’s a legit Top 6 center and he’s arrival also likely means they’ll get more out of both David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha next season

    Things not to Love:

Elias Lindholm only scored 6, 5×5 goals last year between Calgary and Vancouver and the past two seasons both his high level numbers and his advanced metrics haven’t exactly been on the right side of “great”, in fact they’ve kind of just been in the realm of “barely good enough”

Again, I love Lindholm but in terms of their overall Top 6 scoring talent it’s hard to really say that they improved very much by just adding Lindholm and subtracting Debrusk

    Adds: Elias Lindholm
    Subtracts: Jake Debrusk

The last two seasons combined Jake Debrusk has scored 46 goals. Lindholm, 37

Anything else as of right now in their top 6? Um, nope

So again Bruins Homers before you start in

I like Lindholm and he’ll make them better while also helping them to get more out of both Pasta and Zacha. 100% agree with this sentiment

However, he’s not an elite 1c or high end scoring threat (note he’s two elite years were with Tkachuk & Gradeau, so…) and he’s been declining, not ascending from a scoring perspective two years running

    AND

No one on planet earth could say with a straight face that the Boston Bruins got infinitely better in terms of their overall Top 6 scoring depth with their moves today by simply swapping out Debrusk’s offense for Lindholm’s

And no homers, I’m not saying Lindholm is a Debrusk replacement.

They moved one Top 6 wing scorer for a Top 6 center scorer. That’s not exponentially improving theie overall Top 6 scoring problem.

They moved out Jake Debrusk’s offense in the Top 6 for Elias Lindholm’s offense in the Top 6

A guy who scored 6, 5×5 goals last year in a full time NHL role while he played with good players in all situations

Also, the term on Zadorov’s contract is kind of puke inducing but the Cap will go up and that’s just a problem Don Sweeney will have to deal with in 2032 or something because odds are, he’s still going to be GM #yikes

It seems as though the Bruins still know that they have to improve in their Top 6 and it sure seems like some other kind of move is coming

I can’t believe they are either going to slot Frederic or Geekie into a Top role, again replicating the problem Sweeney can’t get away from (i.e. playing bottom 6 guys in Top 6 roles)

Or that they are counting on wild cards like Merkulov or Lysell being their 2RW out of camp, which again, seems like it’s not even close to a real option because Merkulov is not a Top 6 NHL player and all of the reports out of PVD from credible sources indicated Lysell isn't going to be ready to be a full time Top 6 player this coming year in Boston

I think another move is coming. I pray another move is coming

The Bruins got better in a lot of areas today, there is not doubt about that. However, They still haven’t done enough to address their overall Top 6 scoring needs because they subtracted one Top 6 player to only add another without doing anything else in the Top 6

Plenty of time left in the off season though…. Let’s hope Don Sweeney can get figure it out

They can also always address a Top 6 wing at the trade deadline next year if whatever Plan A they decide to go with to start the season ends up imploding

So there’s always that to consider as well, although this process of not building through the draft and constantly trading away draft picks is only becoming more and more of a long term problem

  7. god these guys are dumb – lindholm will be great. hes not an offensive powerhouse, he will be great and really help on the back end.

  8. The Bruins accomplished getting two good players in free agency, possibly started to rebuid their prospect pool and will get the contract done for Swayman. They are a better team today.

  9. The thing everyone seems to be forgetting is how well Poitras played on the second line before he got hurt. Assuming he comes back as 2c and Coyle 3c teams looking pretty good with the potential for prospects to come in and fill any roster spots still open for the taking

  10. Both of them are perfect Bruins. If Eric gets back to two years ago then that is a great deal. Nikita is a steal. He was great in the playoffs. He is a ferocious hitter. He is also really funny in interviews. He is going to be wildly popular in Boston.
