  1. Ah this franchise kicks us all in the nuts again. Perfect.

  2. gottapoop0822

I’ll give him a shot. But I might end up listening to the radio broadcast instead

  3. LeocantoKosta_

Does this guy suck? What’s the deal with the reaction?

  4. Seattlekrakenlegend

A bunch of bummed out people on Twitter that it’s not Bucci

He was being kind of a dick to fans yesterday who were making “what could our lines be with Monahan” posts and was a complete dick about Detroit at the draft. Don’t need that shit here.

  5. EverlastingEvening

Anyone have any clips of him? I would like to hear what he sounds like.

  6. jmatier95

Lots of disappointed people here. I admittedly don’t know much about this guy. But I am looking forward to having a new and younger voice on the broadcast!

I too love Bobby Mac, but prefer him on the radio (which I listen to a lot), and I never thought Bucci was a legit candidate.

  7. Chumpback

Not gonna lie, was hoping for Bobby Mac. I’ll play the wait and see game on this one

We have the most cynical, borderline depressed, fanbase in all of hockey.

We had fans shitting on our pick of Cayden Lindstrom because of his back injury when it turns out that all it was, a back injury.

We had people shitting on how much we paid Sean Monahan even though the cap is going to go up to probably $100M+ in a couple years and his best years of his entire career were playing with Johnny G.

Now we have people in here shitting on this hire when the guy hasn’t even called a preseason game yet. He’s done national games for TNT so he’s probably at least familiar with Jody and Jean-Luc, he’s done some radio in the past which I like, and he went to freaking BG for school.

I know this team has put us through a lot in the past, but god damn people. Enjoy this team and the direction we’re going because we finally have some momentum after YEARS. Not every decision is the worst thing in the world.

    Edit: words

Mears is a solid pickup. I’ve listened to him quite a bit with the Penguins and I think he’ll do just fine here

“Name-dropping with Steve Mears” doesn’t have quite the same ring.

Keepin’ Rims on “The Fan,” at least. 🙂

(Dunno much about Mears. Who would you all prefer?)

This has been such a crazy off season. We hired a new GM/President, drafted 4 OA, hired a new play by play guy, and will probably have a new coach by the end of the week.

  12. Navyblazers2000

Lifelong Penguins fan so he’s perfect because so is half of Columbus.

I don’t dislike Bob McElligot (my dad HATES him lol), but I don’t think he’d work on TV.

  13. NonAsianJasonLee

I don’t listen to Penguins broadcasts – is he really that bad? Or are most of the complaints hive mind

  14. DoubleDumpsterFire

CBJ fan living in Pittsburgh here. Mearsy is great. Not sure where the hate comes from. He’s gonna be excellent with Jody.

  15. Ecruteak-vagrant

As a Pens fan I disliked him, but I’ve hated everyone involved with the broadcast between Lange and the current guy Getzoff. Just a giant gulf of mid broadcasters in between

  16. Don’t know much about him, but listened to some clips this morning and he seems good. Most of the clips were goal calls, so it’s really hard to tell about game flow. I like what I heard. I’m excited about all the changes this year.

  17. SpaceBowie2008

This guy went to Bowling Green with me. Great pick!

  18. SenorWingsuit

Awesome!! Welcome Mears. Keep bringing change to our organization. It has been needed for so long. Clean it all up Donny and LFG Jackets!!!!!!

  19. NontransferableApe

I’m just glad it’s not Bob or Bucci. Fine with me!

  20. I’m just hoping the broadcast isn’t too homer-centric. Maybe I’m in the minority but I like objective broadcasters. It’s fine to be a fan of the team but I always appreciate when a broadcast team calls it as it is and doesn’t make excuses for everything that goes against the team. Detroit is a great example of a phenomenal booth. They love the Wings but they also just love the game of hockey. Hopefully we can get to that level of excellence.
