Have the Dallas Stars taken a massive step back?? A recap of curious day in Free Agency for Dallas

On today’s episode of Locked On Stars, we breakdown everything that went down on day one of Free Agency for the Dallas Stars. After buying out Ryan Suter and moving Chris Tanev who signed a six year deal with Toronto, the Stars had plenty of cap space to make some moves. However, those moves included right shot defensemen Matt Dumba, Illya Lubushkin and Brendan Smith on short term deals. GM Jim Nill would have loved for bigger names or talent, but was simply priced out on certain players. The Stars have glaring concerns on defense that do not feel effectively fixed by the moves yesterday and look to be a worse team today than they were a month ago. On the bright side, Dallas did ink great deals with forwards Sam Steel and Matt Duchene, plus a backup goaltender in Casey DeSmith after losing out on Scott Wedgewood who went to Nashville. It certainly is no time to panic, but the Stars will be asking a lot of players who have not had great seasons in recent memory to play big minutes next season.

  1. It will be interesting to watch. To be honest, I don't have the best feeling. Greetings from 🇩🇪
    Go 🌟

  2. What's up with changing Wedgewood? He had better numbers than Otter this past season… Not impressed either with these non-luster acquisitions. I was and still hoping for Nick Robertson to come to Dallas as He said he wanted out from Toronto.

  3. I’m ok , give them a chance .. new younger guys are coming up .. they made changes to go bigger , nastier

  4. There's positives (Duchene and Steel staying), and immense negatives. It feels like the Stars aren't trying for this year and hoping for a cup in the future. Will they? I dunno. Feels like a second round exit.

  5. Nobody and I mean nobody wants Suter back. Dmen were getting outragous contracts yesterday. They dropped 2 of the slowest skaters in the league and picked up 2 decent Dmen who have a lot of playoff experience. look at their advanced stats in the playoffs. Nils is better than people give him credit for and you have 3 young Dmen knocking on the door. Lets see if Bichsel gets a 9 game tryout at the NHL level.

  6. I feel like next year is going to be a rebuild year. It’s going to be very tough as a fan if Jim doesn’t find a good trade for a top defenseman to get us through playoffs. Do you think the same, or is there something I’m missing? I honestly think we lose a lot of good players next year, and we’ll be stuck with a lot of young players that can’t produce at a high level.

  7. where are you getting all these takes and stats. Dumba played 15 minutes a playoff game for the Bolts and had decent stats in those games. jeez the world isn't falling. You already have 3 of your top 4 dmen, Bichsel will get a look this preseason, Nils is better than Hank. walker sucked for colorado in the playoffs. no way they should have given Tanev that contract, he'll never play a full season and won't see out that term.

  8. What did the 113 points get us last year? Vegas and Colorado in the first two rounds? Maybe they are just looking at the playoffs in which we basically played 5 D the whole run. Not perfect but acting like D core was miles ahead of this at the beginning of last season is laughable

  9. After, sleeping on it, i like what the Stars did. 3 Dmen and resigning Duchene. DeSmith is a good back up. I hated losing Tanev, but he wanted term. 6 years for a 35 yr old D,etc. I trust Jim Nill. Stars will be in the hunt again next year.

  10. I wouldn't say massive step back given all the weapons we have up front, but certainly they did not replace Suter/Tanev in terms of immediate benefits. However they did add some grit and physicality. It certainly is a bad day whenever you can't reach agreement with a star player after buying out a solid player to sign him. The DeSmith signing is an upgrade. The Stars have a third of their cap tied up in 4 players. The Tanev re-sign was always a huge gamble considering the way we got him.

  11. Surer is better then any of the guys we signed, petrovic is better actually. Yesterday was an absurd free agency, steel and duchene signing were perfect, but our D-corp has been shredded. Not only that, but it was destroyed for 8 million dollars of cap space. Could’ve been montour, walker, slavin, ang of these guys actually. A 6 year deal for tanev would’ve been better than these signings.

  12. I'm thinking Nill didn't realize free agency started noon EST and forgot to adjust the clock. Dallas really feels like they could be 4th in the division this year.

  13. i think jim nill is playing the long game, signing a couple guys to try them out while we wait for theses benn and seguin contracts to run out and then make some serious moves with the extra cap space

  14. Joey, the guys we added played on shitty teams. They were asked to play upper 6 minutes that isn't needed in Dallas. Dumba is better than a 6 or 7. We needed to toughen up. Hintz playing with a broken finger without repercussions cannot stand. Price will paid now. Given the superstars we need to pay I'm fine with these guys. Make no mistake, if a team thought they could bully Dallas, and they did, that option is weaker today. I'd bet a dozen donuts DeBoer said something to Nill that sounded something like "we need more bad asses. Benn can't do it all". .

  15. I don't get it. We resigned Duchane. We need the physical play from Dumba and I'm planning on Bichsel and Borque will be on the team in October. The Stars have plenty of scoring. And no way I'd give Tanev that 6yr deal

  16. Jamie Ben’s 9 mill is a wall. Take that off books and yes they could have been more aggressive but with o my 19mill at cap they didn’t have much they added lots of puck blocking physical bodies which may be what the coach wanted for his d men. He has skill bodies on d to pair with them so….

  17. In 2021 last year of Bowness we had 98 points and that roster is miles worse than the one we have currently the d core is slightly worse than in Pete's 1st year a small step back I'd say 107 points 1 less than Pete's 1st year…. Nashville is overrated they overpaid for 2 out of 3 deals and they overpaid for people at the end of their primes….. We will be fine we will be fighting with colorado for the division
