As a Leafs fan I believe the captain should be Rielly before anybody on this team after Tavares
The Tavares hire is where they REALLY screwed their rebuild – you had half a dozen good, young stars and you couldn't name ONE of them the Captain?!? By doing that, they told their young core 'we don't trust you, we can't rely on you.' They didn't need him and his salary could and still can be better spent elsewhere. Move him at the deadline while he still has value (not to Boston for effs sake) and use the money on defensive depth. All I can say is that it's a good thing that the Preds and others are taking all of the mid-30s guys off the market – eliminates at least ONE of the dumb decisions the Leafs could make…
The aves havent even done this with MacKinnon, and Landeskog hasnt pleayed in two years…

I agree, it would be pretty distasteful to do something like that to Tavares for no good reason. The guy has represented the team/organization the way you'd expect any captain to and now, after how many years of crying about how hard it is to get hometown players to come back and play for the Leafs (see Stamkos, for example, years ago), you're going to put the screws to Tavares? Great way to split the dressing room and ensure that no star players from Toronto ever want to come back and put on the jersey.
Tampa has the pucks to do what Toronto doesn't we lost stamkos and it hurts but julian is right. Stay and delusions and suffer.š

Unpopular opinion: I think Nylander has strong leadership qualities and should be the captain š¤·āāļø
Itās a passing of the torch, not āstrippingā someone of their dignity. JT has been the captain for 6 years, and heās been fine, but itās time for change. This is AM34s team, no point in waiting another season.
For a new captain, I'd go with Nylander, the guy who told Marner to STFU and stop whining, this isn't the juniors.
Matthews isn't ready for the C and I'm not even a Toronto fan. That's a nice way of making your current captain look like a buffoon: strip him of the C.

Morgan has plateaued and his leadership is not good as Matthew.
This is Matthews team and has been since he got drafted. They were so close to giving him the C in 2019 and since then heās has grown a ton as a player through his defensive play as well as being one of the vets on the team now. Sure heās not the most vocal through the media or to the team but neither is Tavares (or Reilly). Itās time to give him the C.

It's a serious convo because Tavares has been weak and Matthews has been great. What we used to do in the GTHL was split captaincy. One guy wears the C on home jerseys, and another guy on Away jerseys. I know those are literally the little leagues, but I'm surprised you don't see it more in the NHL.
Mathews isn't captain material. He's more worried about goal scoring titles than winning. There's no way I would want a captain that misses half the playoffs due to an 'illness'
Leafs management isn't any better than most of Leafs Nation. Knee jerk reactions. If I was a leaf I would be like Robertson (who I don't like) and beg to get out of town. The so called fans and management are going to burn any bridge they were building to have more star players come in. After 60 years it is not the players but the management and the cry babies that have me looking for a new team….

The sad thing is I think Tavares helps that islanders team a lot more in those 2 conference finals against the lightning. Idk if they win but having Tavares in a game 7 would be nuts.
I think Matthews is working to earn it, and I think he deserves it. But damn, dont do JT like that. He doesnt deserve that. Give him the last season.
Mo should have been chosen as C instead of JT years ago. But JT has been clutch on many games, he deserves it one last run.
If Matthews wants to wear that C, heās gotta go out there and earn it. Actually lead the team past round 1 instead of disappearing.
Having a hard time believing kyper on this one. Knowing how close he is to the mariner camp, this could be them just putting something out there to change the media talk. Makes no sense to take the C from Tavares now. Just wait until next year when his contract is done.

Tavares is a good assistant captain. He never went deep in the playoffs with the Islanders, and that's where Toronto needs leadership.
Matthews isn't right for it either.
Everybody knows itās Matthewsā team anyway. Makes no sense to cause that shift in the media. I also donāt think Matthews would take it from Tavares. Sammy gave Auston the mvp belt for the win and Auston said āno, this is yours to keep for another game.ā

This is why you canāt have nice things. Itās July, the Cup is decided, draft is done, free agency is done, went well. Why why why even contemplate doing this. Go to the lake, itās summer plenty of time to blow it up in the fall.

Matthewās is a terrible choice for captency . You canāt be the best regular season scorer , sleep in the playoffs and lead the team because leading the team is what the captain is meant to do
There's no way Matthews would be cool with taking the captaincy from a guy who's not only performed very well for the Leafs (albeit not up to his contract) and is a good friend & long-time teammate of his.
David Kampf for the C – all day every day. Who cares where the captaincy goes? This team and its management is in complete denial as to their spinning wheels stuck in a snow bank. Morgan Riley is too slow now – has been for two seasons. Woll is unproven damaged goods, Murray is proven damaged goods. Tavares should never have been signed – never. 11 million bucks (55 million to spend for 5 years) to spend on goalies and Defense. Marner was allowed to be a regular season hero and a playoff coward for years. The Hunter/Dubas fiasco. I could keep going – but why? Systemically, the team is rotten, yet everyone thinks a new (cheap) coat of paint will work – Spezza, Thornton, OReily, Bertuzzi, Schenn, Giordano etc, etc, etc. An example of the rot – how is it possible that Shanahan still has a job? Anyone? Watch if the Democrats drop Joe Biden, The leafs will sign him to a one year contract. I turn to the wind and weep ever so quietly.
I don't take anything Kyper says as fact. He blows too much hot steam around. But lets say he is right. This is too much noise and too much to do in Toronto if JT isn't leaving. This would be a PR nightmare. Just let him run out the course of his contract. If he resigns for lets say a low amount cause he really wants to stay then maybe you say hey you have to publicly say your giving up the C to Auston now. But even then I not sure if anyone would believe this was his choice. Depends on how it goes down I guess
