Matvei Gridin selected first overall in the CHL import draft

Sounds like he won’t be going to University of Michigan. Also sounds like he might be traded to Rimouski. Would have preferred if he stayed in the NCAA but seems like it’s a personal decision on his part (academic) as to why he is choosing to play in the CHL instead

As an import, it should also be possible to play him in the ECHL or AHL if he is able to earn a roster spot. With that said it is good for him to have a CHL roster spot as a backup.

Not good news. For sure want him to be traded. Sucks he’s in the Q. Would rather have him go to Michigan but sounds like there’s an academic issue.

  3. Positive way of looking at it, he should get top line/pp all situations ice time. In a stacked Michigan roster, if he struggled at all could be far down the pecking order.

Rimouski hosts the Memorial Cup this year, so if he does end up there via trade, it might be a good opportunity for him. Would have been sweet if the Hitmen could have snagged him, but either way, it will be interesting to see him in the CHL.

I’m an idiot when it comes to this type of fine print, but with him not going to NCAA, does that mean there are no/fewer loopholes about not reporting? Total hypothetical- just trying to understand how university is used as an out for drafted players.
