TARASENKO TO DETROIT, YZERMAN TRADES FABBRI – Winged Wheel Podcast – July 7th, 2024

Steve Yzerman wasn’t done yet – Vladimir Tarasenko is coming to Hockeytown.

Tune in as we start by analyzing the Detroit Red Wings signing Vladimir Tarasenko to a 2 year, $4.75 million AAV contract, how he fits into the forward lineup alongside Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat, & others, the deal’s value & structure, how he replaces offense left by Perron, Gostisbehere, etc., & more (3:15).

Next, Yzerman trading Robby Fabbri to the Anaheim Ducks for cap space (and another goalie friend for Cossa, Augustine, Campbell, Lyon, Talbot & Husso) (13:00), Joe Veleno opting for arbitration & what it means for a potential buyout (not Holl) (20:10), and the signing of Tyler Motte (25:40). After that, his press conference, including thoughts on the team’s standings, chasing Stamkos or another mystery player, whether the team defense is enough to help Moritz Seider & the goalies, how Edvinsson, Johansson, and Berggren will fit in, and what roster space means for Kasper, Mazur, and Danielson (27:30).

After covering the performances of key prospects & players like Brandsegg-Nygard, Sandin Pellikka, & others at the Red Wings Development Camp (52:45), we analyze the Savoie for McLeod trade between Buffalo and Edmonton (55:15) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (59:35) – enjoy!

  1. I love 19, but copp and holl are handcuffs, cost us 91, wallman and some picks. We are now fully reliant on so many prospects panning out, which is possible, but nowhere near probable… if you have 10, lucky for 3 to work out. Don’t mind Tara, but…

  2. Even though we didn't make the playoff last season, I want to make it very clear, that the last couple weeks of Detroit hockey this team produced was some of the most entertaining games ever, and should go down in Detroit history as such

  3. Brad quickly responded, because when Evan said if Johanson can play his way onto the roster. Edvinson proved that not to be the case. When Yzerman said young guys who plays their way onto the roster, he will make room for them, is already been bullshit. You can say circumstances, i say if u say something mean it. He is going to have to earn that again by his actions. Idc whether or not their was room, Steve caused that. Its one of the bitches i have for Steve, but im still not the guy who thinks we need to get rid of Yzerman. Just had way too many years of Holland and over ripening of prospects, to not hold Steve to his word.

  4. What frustrates me the most is that when we don't have loads of injuries, that RW doesn't play their youngsters in e.i. nine matches. During an entire season, there are many occasions when this can happen. Most players are bang up or have minor groin problems all the time. Certainly S.Y does not want a very expensive press box. RW had for a long time around 6/Mil in the stands before they got rid of Kostin e.i.

Still believe that Burger will be traded together with a goalkeeper and Velano in some package deal. Also think RW will take a step back next season, don't see how RW today would be equivalent to last year. Other teams have gotten better on paper, RW has marginal improvements e.i. as a goalkeeper. However, RW has a bad history of burning out their goalkeepers e.i. Ned, Husso & Alex. Who will it be this year?

  5. Im sick of Yzerman's dumb yzerplan…… I want the kids in Detroit!!!! NOT more shitty players like Mott, Copp, Chiarot, Holl, And Maatta !!!!!!! I Dont want any more player's from The State Michigan, or U of M…..

  6. What's funny is that Berggren and Sprong were criticized for not being so good at defending and instead Kane got an extension and Terasenko was brought in for 2 years (neither of them are known for their defense). Much more salary is now being spent on similarly gifted players like Berggren and Sprong. I don't want to say that Berggren and Sprong are/would be better, but they would be cheaper and we would have saved ourselves a year in development (goal-oriented players who could have played in the third line) to see how far we would have come with this younger combination. My main criticism goes to Leonde who didn't give young players a chance and probably won't in the future.

Anyway, I'm glad we have Terasenko and Kane now and hope they can give us and the team a lot.

But, what a waste of time for the young players in the Red Wings system.

As you said, if it continues like this for a longer period of time, they are even loyal and stay in the AHL, then soon they will no longer be so young and we will never know what they would have given us, for the Red Wings team
