Mark Scheifele charges Jake Evans: Tough Call suspension recommendation

Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets was ejected for charging Jake Evans of the Montreal Canadiens late in Game 1 of their second round series. It was a blatant disregard for respect of an opponent. He needs to sit for a while.

  1. Play stupid games win stupid prizes Evans should know to keep his head up. 1 game or a fine. He didn't skate past the circle and it's shoulder to shoulder. Keep your head up kid. Or your career will be over.

  2. This is legitimately the most intelligent breakdown of the rule book and qualifications on this play that I have seen. I still wish it was more. Schiefele is not a dirty player. No history. Respected. But he made an awful call and the intent here, to me, was to blow that kid up and get his frustration out. To send a message. I wish 20 games was on the table.

  3. Clean hit. The only "dirty" part about it is that his intent is clear. He doesn't attempt to make a play on the puck. He is simply looking to send Evans into the fifth dimension.

  4. All I can say is that Scheifele is a marked man. I don't wish anything to happen to him, but I have to think teams of players are coming for him when he least expects it. He might his head knocked off.

If that wasn't a dirty hit, I don't even want to imagine what one would be.

  5. For the part of Evans, everyone understands the idea of "taking a hit to make the play." If I thought I was gonna earn an empty-net cookie, I would ask myself whether I would be willing to pay the price for it. (And of course I would get smashed for a G!) So I do think some of these younger players have to be aware and protect themselves. Because some don't want to take a hit, for instance, they make a soft play out of their zone as they brace for a hit. That's a choice. He had to expect a hit coming when making such a play.

But this doesn't excuse Scheifele. For his part, he could have easily prevented a goal. But he wasn't about that. He was all about venting anger and frustration because he was losing. I think a strong player would take pride in having snuffed the guy's attempt at an extra goal, and that would spite him and give him a "f*%# off with that noise" and might spark my team to say that we play to the end. The key in it all is that he makes no attempt to play the puck. If he puts his stick down and stops the puck and then braces himself and lets Evans run into him, any incidental contact is excused. I mean, he did have skate the length of the ice to be there for when Evans comes out. It's not like he traveled a distance to target a stand-still guy in a puck battle or something. But all of Scheifele's language was predatory. I agree it's not a hockey play.

Of course, again, in today's context, 9 would be too much, and I'm not calling for it in today's playoffs. But in a safer NHL like Tough Call imagines, this would easily be 9. (And then it would become closer to nothing as players wouldn't even think about plays like that.)

  6. Schefele coasted from the dot, this is not charging. Clean hit. Players that fail to keep their head up should be eliminated from the game.

  7. People arguing that this is a clean hit have probably been hit in the head too many times themselves.

  8. I say clean hit. The contention that you have to play the puck to make a hit is ridiculous. He didn't jump into the player or target his head. Evans came around the net low as he had to to make the turn. This is playoff hockey…. if you are even near the puck, expect to get hit. It's part of what makes playoff hockey so intense and great. Otherwise it's men's league.

I hope Jake Evans is OK. I like good clean physical hockey but really don't like players taken off on stretchers.

  9. Evans didn't have to score on a wraparound his choice. Clean hit. Not a charge..maybe late.

  10. Sheifele’s family got the brunt of nasty call and threats I heard. Well, that comes with the territory after that blatant vicious hit. You get what you deserve

  11. Mark had no intention to stop the puck. He's stick is on he's side, he's preparing to ram threw Jake. DoucheBag move. Enjoy you're suspension, you let you're team down.

  12. Obviously most of the posters here did not listen to the explanation in this video as to what Mark scheifele was doing and obviously he was trying to injure someone with a headshot and not trying to keep the puck out of the net and a one-goa playoffl game with a minute left. I'm sure he has coaches and teammates wondering what the f*** were you doing how about putting your stick on the ice to keep the puck out of the net.

Oh by the way Jake Evans was out cold in the f**** air before he hit the ice. That doesn't happen with a shoulder check to the chest.
Oh wait it's Evans fault right? MS charged him for more than 20 feet away by the way when he gathered the puck before he went behind the net Mark scheifele was 20 to 30 ft away at that point. major charging. That's the main reason he was suspended and four playoff games is probably like 12 regular-season games.

  13. You probably have never played hockey or know anything about it, He skated as hard as he could to prevent the goal from being scored and finished the play. It's unfortunate that Evens got injured but thats the way to play the game. Big difference between 1 and 2 goal game with one minute left. Take you're commentary to football and quarterbacks if you know so much from now on since I can no longer watch that sissy game anymore.

  14. Hey Tough call – you can't skate can you.. No idea how this game is played.. Talking about stick in the air not on the ice.. At this point he is still not in a position to have 2 hands on the stick / on the ice.. B – you never look at the puck that far out.. Jezz your clueless !

  15. I agree with your assessment. The only sensible hockey play that Sheifele had was to try to stop the puck from going into the goal. Instead, he chose to make a hit with high risk of player injury. As for the punishment, I agree with the league's 4 games. I respect a good clean hit as much as the next guy, but that hit was totally unnecessary.

  16. How TF can you tell his eyes are on Evans, and not the puck, when all you can see is the back of his head. GTFOH

  17. Hey tough call, analyze Myer's hit on Duncan Keith for me please. https://youtu.be/3zZNl2tGXDQ?t=52 Please advise how this one is different from Scheifele's? (it's worse as Keith did a face first into the boards) I look forward to your analysis and suspension decision.

  18. So I guess nowadays, a player has to decide if the guy he's going to check is PAYING ATTENTION?! Keep your head up!
