The Washington Capitals’ general manager, Brian MacLellan, promised to make changes to the team. During the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas, he mentioned that the team was working on several things but didn’t provide many details. He emphasized the need for the team to get younger while remaining competitive. MacLellan made significant changes to the team’s roster by trading for 26-year-old Pierre-Luc Dubois, acquiring Andrew Mangiapane and Logan Thompson, and making a big move to revamp the team’s defense by acquiring defenseman Jakob Chychrun and signing defenseman Matt Roy to a six-year contract.

I agree with Keith. Charlie needs NHL quality peers, nothing against our other two, but they don’t have the experience that Thompson does.

Logan Thomas is a good backup at best. He's injury prone. Though it's a good psychological factor for competition as your guess stated. Logon is a low cap hit with a 1 year contract. Very low risk my opinion. Shep may get some looks this season. If Shep does play and doesn't perform you have a somewhat reliable backup in Logan T. So it could add more incentive for both goaltenders (Shep and Lin) to do well.
I also have a feeling that Shep very independent workout (as stated by hershey) maybe a turnoff for the Capitals organization.
