How’s The Rebuild (?) Going…

Nhl hockey today – With nhl free agency 2024 signings , trades and general nhl news becoming more sparse as the offseason rolls on, I want to give my overview and thoughts on the calgary flames rebuild / retool since craig conroy has been gm with all the big moves he’s made jacob markstrom trade elias lindholm nikita zadorov tyler toffoli andrew mangiapane and more, plus the zayne parekh draft and touch a tad on calgary flames development camp 2024 top prospects in the organization. They wont be competing with the likes of connor mcdavid edmonton oilers or quinn hughes vancouver canucks in the pacific division, but they are headed in the right direction. 1. There are still 2 drafts to go in this "rebuild" Next year has a top 20 similar to this year but the next 65 picks are a crap shoot. It's a much deeper draft and if the flames get a top 5……he's gonna be good, Parehk good. The may add a couple of good draft picks as well if Anderson and/or Kadri get traded. Stay tuned.

  2. I appreciate the fact that he’s not half assing it. Get rid of the guys you can, keep the ones you can’t and draft your ass off. I reserve judgement on the outcome, but there is definitely hope. The biggest challenge is replacing Markstrom. Developing a world class goalie is very difficult. And when you don’t have anything left to trade for one, that’s your only option. I’m not convinced that Wolf is the guy. Time will tell.

  3. I've never seen most of these prospects play, but just from reports most of them sound like good middle-of-the-lineup players, which is what you expect to get in the draft when you pick 12-15th every year. You usually don't find a franchise making superstar at that point of the draft, unless you get lucky and one falls to you. They did get lucky with Gaudreau, but that doesn't often happen. The cup winners & genuine contenders usually have at least 2-3 super high end guys, and those are hard to get when you're picking 12th, and we know they can't attract those guys as free agents. But this year, if Wolf isn't the goalie he's cracked up to be, the Flames might just end up with a top 3 pick.

  4. I’m a Flames fan and I love what Conroy has done so far. It’s been a rough last few years with everyone wanting out, I’m hoping he’ll be able to bring in more talent with his history of playing in the city for so long. GM status aside he’s also a great ambassador for the team. I’m excited to see what this season brings, I’ll consider it a win if a good team culture can be formed and carried forward into the future

  5. Conroy doing exactly what he should, getting rid of players for assets, whether it's picks or prospects. The Flames are loaded with currency, what happens with those picks and prospects remains to be seen but so far so good.

  6. Flames finish just outside the playoffs pretty much every year. Because of that they will continue to finish there with no early draft picks. As someone else mentioned in the comments they haven't had a number 1 pick yet. To be successful long term in today's NHL your team has to absolutely suck for a period of time to get some top picks.

  7. jumping so quickly to a rebuild after the hubs trade an signing kadri is ballsy yet smart. takes a qualified and realistic gm to understand his veteran core isn't good enough to win a cup, and expending valuable future assets for bandaids will never work. so just resetting and doing a full scorched earth rebuild is the best thing to do. 2024 was a great draft, they got quality assets for the vets they traded. keep it up with the kadri deals and 4 to 5 years they can get back into the playoff picture with a bright Young core.

  8. I mean come on guys… you have a couple young players with decent potential. The way teams are built nowadays, they’ll need a lot more, this is not enough to make a dent in the playoffs. There’s alot of other teams that futures look a lot brighter that’s forsure.

  9. This guy can't even decide if its a rebuild or not thats how cold his takes are. He created an entire video out of it. "Its not going to be a boring season i don't think!". Congratulations bro

  10. Not a lot of faith in Conroy. He just has that nitwit look about him. Players don't want to play in Calgary. Bad ownership.

  11. So far I really like the direction and attitude of Craig Conroy towards making the Flames competitive once again, moving the Wranglers to Calgary sets them up well to build an excellent developmental system and that is something that was really lacking in the past. Full marks to Connie as GM , and his commitment to the path they have chosen.

  12. This is what can be called Part two if what I think is Conroy's five year plan, the tools are slowly and methodically being found, brought into the mix and when things start to show that the time has come we won't be say WTF…we know what will be coming.

  13. Soon as they trade out Nazem Kadri they will take a step in the right direction. They miss the playoffs they trade him.
