[Portzline] Told Todd McLellan is out of the running to be the next CBJ coach. Between CBJ, McLellan, and his former club, the Kings, an agreement on a multi-year contract could not be reached. Possible CBJ circle back with an adjusted offer.

As someone who doesn’t know a ton about coaching contracts, why does a team that fired a coach have to be consulted during the hiring process?

I want to see numbers. Was McLellan asking for the sun and the moon? Or was CBJ being cheap? McLellan ticks all the boxes that Columbus needs in a coach.

Pretty sure it was Portzline that said Waddell likes to talk money before the final interviews so that they aren’t wasting time further along in the process. It doesn’t necessarily mean that McLellan was the top choice.

It’s also possible that McLellan wasn’t a big difference between Evason and Woodcroft and the Kings wanted us to take over his whole contract amount… and if he didn’t interview any better than the other two then whats the point in paying him 5.75 mill just to help the Kings owner out

  4. If money is the issue, are we really surprised? The team is still paying Vincent and potentially Babcock. Also, McLellan isn’t like this 10/10 perfect coach, so I’m not sure why there’s so much negativity around this news. There’s still good candidates left, and honestly probably better candidates

I don’t like the idea we cleared Pascal out to be told we can’t pay our top candidate

Last place team with 94% capacity can’t afford the coach they need. I have shelled out good money the last couple years to watch one decent season of JH and a half of the season of Fantilli, and a shit load of losses. I have watched the Coyotes embarrass us. I watched the Sabres put up a 9 spot, paying up to sit in the second row for that beating.

If they can’t afford a coach, I guess I can’t afford tickets to watch another long season. TV and radio for me this year. Maybe just the outdoor game live.

This is the stupidest shit ever. If you got fired as a coach/executive and the fact the team that fired you has any say/gets any compensation is the biggest crock of shit ever.

If you want to keep your people pay them what they are worth. Don’t use a stupid rule like this to keep them/control them.
    Especially if you fire them.

The only thing I can think of here is that LA has contract language to pay less in compensation to McLellan based on any new contract he might receive while they are still paying out his old contract…and apparently can deny his new contact if it doesn’t meet thier hopes in term or dollars? Maybe the CBJ offer isn’t getting LA totally off the hook and they are pushing for something that would?

  9. I stumbled on this random tweet from last night: [https://x.com/big_yummy/status/1810799763291279455](https://x.com/big_yummy/status/1810799763291279455)

If true, not sure what they play is for the Kings by demanding the Jackets assume a ton of money…they’re on the hook for the 5+ million for the year McLellan has left regardless. I could understand a bit if the two teams were in the same conference or division…or maybe if the Jackets were contenders.

  10. This organization is a clown show. To not have a coach in place by now is absurd. Going through the draft and now development camp without a freaking coach is just embarrassing. We are not a serious team.

  11. McLellan would be a great fit if they can make it work, but I’d be pretty happy if they put out a flyer for Todd Nelson.

AHL =/= NHL, but the dude just won back to back Calders. He’s pretty damn good as a HC.

Omg so like news of new coach tomorrow then

  13. unimpressedcynic

Good I’ve been a fan of Evason for the job from the start

  14. sleeplessGoon

We could definitely find worse coaches but as someone who watched probably more kings games than jackets games (my brothers a kings fan) Todd ain’t the guy to lead us to contender status

  15. Dude not the kings.

I see Hedger is stirring up shit again making CBJ twitter upset and angry when he can’t even keep his story straight.

  17. Dense-Plenty5420

Sounded like in later posts money isn’t the issue. Perhaps it’s the control he wants and don doesn’t want to give.

Hedger says that LAK was willing to take on $2 million of the $5.5 he was owed for next year
