  1. Sid will stay, I agree I don't think that was in doubt. However, I wish it was…I think Sid ought to be in the playoffs playing playoff hockey, not developing the next generation. In my mind Sid the competitor doesn't rhyme with Sid developing the next generation to win. I don't feel confident Dubas can build a team to win in his final years (or even if that is what he wants to do)….so it's weird to say, but I'm disappointed he is staying in Pittsburgh instead of pursuing winning…..Winning is what he has been built to be about…and it feels weird to make a decision that isn't about winning (from my perspective).

  2. The idea of Sid with MacKinnon would have been really fun to watch, and fun for both those guys too….Marchand is a free agent when Sid is…imagine the three went to the same team….it feels like that would have been fun for the three of them

  3. @DK I think the reason why fans repeat rumors/lies that are blatantly wrong is because hockey is the only sport they follow and it gives them an excuse to talk about hockey when everyone else are talking about baseball and football which are really slow sports compared to hockey.

  4. Its makes him a great player if he started and ended him career at the same club. Like a Steve Yzerman, Super Mario #66

  5. Excluding the Phil Kessel "hot dog exposé," the craziest (most disrespectful?) narrative I've heard come out of Toronto media was that Sid should want to come to the Leafs – with the Pens retaining the bulk of his salary, of course – to play 3rd line center. Why? Because if he helped the Leafs win the Cup, then his legacy is guaranteed, as if to imply everything he's done to this point just isn't enough to ensure his place in the Hall of Fame.

  6. If he does stay I know Pens fans need to be LOUD every game from start to finish. I dont care how down we are. The fans are gonna matter a lot this year imo and I think the word should spread on THAT.

  7. You’re asking why people believe reporters that make stuff up? Take a look at the political climate in the United States, that’s how it’s been for the last eight/nine years.

  8. We won’t know how good OR bad the Jake deal was for another 3-5 years …I do know ONE thing ,almost all 9m players in their prime , fetch 1st rounders …. Like Anaheim got for HENRIQUE FFS .

  9. @DK I think it is more the community aspect of it. It also gives them something to discuss albeit even if it is factually incorrect. That's why there a still hockey related message boards out there that are still thriving. I think the only other sport that has as much movement as the NHL is the NBA. Maybe they are just trying to recoup the feeling of FA, TD, Draft or maybe they just want to talk pucks and don't have the envoirment to do so. Even in PGH, you can literally discuss Steelers with anyone, but discussing Pens narrows down that list.

  10. Edmonton fans do it too, the annoying thing is both toronto and Edmonton fans don't realize Sid's a Canadians fan. The brady factor is the dumbest thing tsn tries to use. Brady actually had something to prove, Crosby already won with two different coaches

  11. DK, my guy, hockey fans just aren’t as deep and dedicated as they used to be. Hockey “drama” or “rumors” nowadays are running high nowadays like you said because there is zip going on in the hockey world so in my opinion, I think that given that people want the potential story or drama, all it takes is one look at a headline without even reading it to nit pick. It’s something to show other people without showing them any of the truth

  12. Thanks DK, Self J1Q much different. Honestly, In sports there are things that people love to talk about and speculate. Some love to take it to the next level, get out of the box some sort of stress relief I guess. There are all kinds of reasons. Some are looking for what they believe is true, and listen to them to see if there is something better. The best thing I ever did is come across DK sports. I had to explore to find you. So glad I did. Thank you DK, Great show

  13. With respect to your J1Q DK, I think there's 2 main points… 1) As a penguins fan from Toronto, hockey is so engrained in the identity of the city, and of the country of Canada as a whole.. that a lot of what TSN or local Toronto media does/says is similar to EPSN constantly talking about the Cowboys/Lakers or doing LeBron vs MJ segments because they know it gets clicks and there's nothing else of substance to talk about. Every big name gets linked with the Leafs the same way every big name gets linked with the Cowboys/Lakers/Yankees etc. regardless of any legitimacy to those moves actually happening 2) I think the lack of big-time money in hockey (relative to other sports) makes it easier to wildly speculate without any repercussions. Its one thing to suggest that a player might sign a $30M contract elsewhere in hockey vs a $300M contract in basketball or football, especially when salaries in basketball are tied to accolades and you can make more on a max contract when resigning vs in free agency. Hockey simply doesn't have the same financial stakes so the 'rumour mill' doesn't need to be policed as strictly. just my thoughts love the daily shots as always

  14. To a certain extent DK, the clickbait articles will have no comment section for fan feedback when they know they're reaching

  15. A big part of the issue with the baseless speculation referenced in today's J1Q is that much of legitimate media has been supplanted by a "Jock-ocracy" of former players, most of whom made their (brief) living in the NHL with their fists. These individuals are incapable of providing a level of analysis beyond the "$**t-shooting" that they used to do in the back of the bus on their AHL road trips, but for many that is sufficient.

I appreciate that DK and Taylor do better than that.

  16. J1Q: I know the prospects aren't much to write about (yet) but is it enough to have a little hope? Last couple of drafts seemed good, Guentzel trade brought back some pieces but is it enough to get excited that the future won't be generation x again?

  17. Re your J1Q request to explain hockey fan interest in speculation, here is another take.
    1. Social media, social media, social media. Short attention spans, click driven content, and everything gets repeated even if it is clearly bogus. Not hockey specific, but it has a multiplier effect on speculation.
    2. There are more trades in the NHL than in the NFL or MLB, similar numbers to the NBA. As a result, speculation about trades is genuinely more relevant to hockey than football or baseball. There is plenty of speculating and pontificating about NBA and NHL trades among fans – because they might happen.
    3. Because of the nature of the game, teams are always looking for proven performance in terms of goals, assists, 5 on 5 chances etc., but also for potential chemistry with the players they have. As a result, for fans, it is interesting to play both performance GM (we need more RHD in the system, more goals from the middle six, and more size on the wings) and also psychologist GM (we need more grit, we need more "drag-em-into-the-fight", we need less prima donna behaviour, we need 10, no 20 Lars Ellers).

  18. Lots of digs at Canadian media these days lol You just have to know what is legitimate news and what are rumours. I enjoy listening to ideas and brainstorming. I don't believe them, but sometimes it starts to paint a bigger picture to analyze.

I am good at remembering when reporters hated a newly signed player and said they were a terrible signing, only to love them later and want them re-signed. Or vise versa. But reporters rarely admit their faults. They just hope people forget what they thought about the guy 2 months prior lol those are amusing times!
