I'm sure none of us are really worried about the age of our roster, but I was curious and decided to just look into it a little more.
NHL_Rosters had our average age ranked as 4th oldest with an avg. age of 29.7
The average age is based on 12F, 6D, 2G.
NHL_Rosters used a lineup of:
Some obvious numbers bringing the number up: Burns (39), Staal (35), Andersen (34).
Using ages from ESPN I got an average age of 28.9, which puts us tied with WAS as the 7th oldest team.
With that Lineup, the average age per position group: Forward (27.5), Defense (31.5), Goaltending (29.5).
However, (and it's all guessing) I don't see this being our starting lineup. As many have speculated, Fast could be going on LTIR. Also can see at least 1 rookie making the roster, potentially 2.
Let's say 2 Rookies make the roster booting Fast (LTIR) and Kuznetsov (First Sub in Playoffs). Nadeau, Blake, and FUS have been discussed as the most likely to have a shot making it. Let's be conservative and use the 2 older of the 3 (Nadeau and Blake) so that FUS's young age doesn't influence the average too much.
We end up with an average age of 27.7, which is the 10th Youngest in the league. This brings our already young Forward group from an average of 27.5 to 25.5.
Now let's say Morrow gets the bump after a few games in the AHL and boots Walker.
This brings us down 1 more spot to 9th Youngest in the League.
Now a fun one… Lets say Burns is cooked and is looking slow like the playoffs
This puts us essentially tied with Ottawa as the 5th Youngest.
I know we could nitpick who's in/out and I'm just making random guesses. Like I doubt we sign Walker 5 years just to bench him for Morrow. And I know other teams could also change their lineups which changes the ranking as a whole. This is just all fun to look at.
All of this to say… We have a really young Forward group, decently old Defense group.

Obviously this is all just a thought exercise, but I think with Jake’s departure there’s no way Kuznetsov isn’t playing considering his playoff production. We need shooting talent BADLY right now and for all his faults he has shown he still has that skill. Of course this can change once we’re into the season if his production ends up being like his regular season numbers instead of his 32-goal playoff pace.
From the interview I watched with Tulsky, it seems that he is super focused on the future rather than this season so unless the rookies playing in the AHL absolutely tear it up, I can’t imagine he rushes their promotion. 2025/26 season will see us getting way younger as we move off most of (if not all) Burns, Kuzy, Orlov, Fast, and Andersen.
I think NHL rosters had it correct.
