SEIDER AND RAYMOND NEGOTIATIONS & MBN’S PATH – Winged Wheel Podcast – July 14th, 2024

Now it feels like the offseason is here as the NHL & the Detroit Red Wings have quieted down (for now).

Tune in as we update you on how the Winged Wheel Podcast will slow down for the summer (we’re still going to be here weekly!) (0:00) before we jump into a discussion on Michael Brandsegg-Nygard’s development path, whether he’ll join Axel Sandin Pellikka in Skelleftea in the SHL or join the likes of Nate Danielson, Marco Kasper, Carter Mazur, and others in competing for a Detroit Red Wings or Grand Rapids Griffins spot in the AHL (5:05).

After that, we loop in on the Steve Yzerman & Moritz Seider / Lucas Raymond contract negotiations, what the prospective term and AAV may be, how lessons from Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, & Kyle Dubas in Toronto loom large, how these future stars affect the rest of Detroit’s talent like Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, Patrick Kane, Simon Edvinsson, & more (13:10).

Next, a quick update on Jacob Trouba (28:20) before we take a look at the Detroit Red Wings prospective lineup, where the weaknesses are as Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko may be playing with J.T. Compher, Chiarot, Seider, Johansson, & others moving around on defense, all in front of a flurry of goalies in Lyon, Talbot, Husso, & others (31:15).

Finally, a quick discussion on the salary cap and no income tax states (& Barry Trotz’s comments) (41:45) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (53:40) – enjoy!

  1. SY likes to honor the SHL's contracts if agreed upon ahead of the draft. It has been a system of trust for years now. Plus it is a further year of development/sponsorship and Kronwall and associates get access for advisement to the prospect during the season.
Doubt Kasper makes the final roster, they have players ahead of him. Danielson will make a strong case.

  2. Agree that the salary cap makes no sense for hockey. For basketball and football (Although NFL cap has so many loopholes, it may as well not exist), I can see the argument. But hockey is more akin to baseball than either of those sports in regards to how teams are put together and the talent pool available to pull from. I don't care how much money owners or players make, but they should have the freedom to go as high or low as they please.

  3. I bet we lose Seider or Raymond, maybe both. If they're holding out for big paydays they are probably gone under Yzerman. That's the delay.

  4. Why doesn't the NHL give teams each states Tax rate/to cap limit extra? Haha I commented before it was said oops. 😂 Just listen 🤣🤣
