This is actually a phenomenal trade. McLeod is 2nd fastest skater in the league, 97th percentile defensive analytics, great on the PK, great on faceoffs. The Sabres just radically improved the lineup.

Once you get past the idea of a 9th overall pick being traded and take a close look, Savoie had fallen to 5th on the Sabres prospect depth chart being surpassed by others who cracked their lineup. Lindy Ruff wanted to address speed, pk, and faceoff %. The Sabres got that done. Good trade. Horrible take.

The Sabres have a logjam of prospects, all of similar heights and skill sets, so it made sense to move on from one of them for a guy that helps them right now. I feel like they could’ve traded a less prestigious prospect but I’m not upset with the trade. Savoie wasn’t going to help the Sabres for another year or two and they need to make the playoffs NOW.
Oilers win? Sure. Obliterated? Give me a break. Both teams can come out ok. Plus with Thompson, Tuch, Cozens locked and Quinn, Peterka, Kulich, Rosen, Ostlund, Helenius to follow, where’s the room?
