Should Celtics be worried about the Knicks? | Garden Report

hey Bob Manning here welcome to another summer league edition of the gar report we have Michael Scot here from Hoops hype making his Gard report debut we’ve been meaning to have you on for a while man how you doing what’s up Bobby happy to make it finally happen took a little bit been a little bit of a busy offseason I’m sure we’re going to get into a lot but we’re here in Vegas it’s pretty hot about 115 120 some days so uh happy to be sitting with you in the AC and uh talk with some hoops best place to be uh let’s start with the Knicks right in your backyard there obviously they made a big move with the Nets that doesn’t happen uh but it did and it changed the dynamic in the East a little bit I don’t know how you feel about how it impacts the Knicks because obviously they lost a big piece in hartenstein going out too but when you had a guy like Mel Bridges that’s tough to decline and they went out and what gave up six picks effectively uh with swaps and all that to do it and that gets the Nets moving that gets the Knicks in a really good place and obviously the assortment of their roster the way it’s oriented around the wings now you have to think was done to contend with the Celtics and all their wings and all the guys have to guard in the perimeter no question I mean look Bobby I think when you look at the Eastern Conference right now as of today I think first of all you have to defer to the Boston Celtics as number one they’re the reigning Champions and until they get knocked off they deserve to be the number one uh projected seed going into the new year um you know you hope Chris porzingis can come back healthy um in due time know he’s got to recover but for the Knicks a couple things one the league has valued clearly uh three and D Wings more than ever before and I think we saw that with the Mel Bridges trade we saw that with uh ogan and Obi nearly getting a maxed contract effectively and now being the highest paid player on the Knicks uh the moves were done to compete with Boston to go up against Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown uh specifically okay now you you you touched on Isaiah hartenstein and I think think what it comes down to for the Knicks they look they were going to get out bid they could only pay four for 72 and so once that price range was kind of made clear teams that had cap space whether it was the Thunder whether it was the magic they wanted to get in there obviously Oklahoma City really made a strong offer even though it’s kind of more front loed and um you know for the first two years it’s guaranteed and you get that team option which they can decline when they got to worry about Chad hren Jaylen Williams Etc all those guys uh that they’re going to have to pay up but for the Knicks and and in most teams around the league the thinking is unless you have a guy like Joel embiid uh joic you know maybe a bamat bio for example you’re mostly trying to spend less at the center position uh and and fill out the money more on the wing more point guard and whatnot so that’s what the Knicks did and now uh the jayen Brunson extension I think is huge for them giving them flexibility I mean that really financially was huge I mean it was huge for the Knicks there’s there’s no way getting around that you know they talk about Mel Bridges now potentially doing the same as well time will tell uh but if he does I mean I tell you what it pay to be in villain overa that year I don’t know if uh you know Eric Pascal or uh you know Jay Arie diako everyone’s waiting for him to come back you know what maybe he’ll uh maybe he’ll get a spot on the G League team or something but um yeah I mean it’s it’s really been an interesting Dynamic but to me the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks are the teams to beat in the Eastern Conference I know Philly got Paul George um and they had a busy off season as well but right now I can’t personally count on the health of embiid you know Paul George in the playoffs has uh had an up and down track record it’s not been consistent at all and I think yeah it’s really coming down to the Knicks on paper at least the Knicks and and the Celtics yeah so you’ve seen a lot of bridges since he went to Brooklyn that first year he exploded second year you know he’s kind of the front man on the team and there’s not a ton around him there into that second year so that was a little more uneven but he’s probably going to be going back into that role you saw in Phoenix where he’s more in the perimeter knocking down shots defending taking big assignments on the defensive end what do you think he’s going to look like there how much higher of a level you think he’s going to bring the Knicks I think for Mel I really think you hit it on the head look he’s going to be a three and D guy um I think his efficiency should go up he’s not going to be the 25o game scorer he was the second half of the season after he got traded from the Suns to the Nets you saw for a full year consistently um that you know him being the focal point uh it was tougher for him to score and you know the crazy thing is people don’t even realize is Cam Thomas led the Nets in scoring uh this year yeah he led the Nets in scoring I don’t think people realize that but to me that kind of speaks to you know how tough it is to be a number one guy I think for male uh on the Knicks you know you got Julius Randall uh who’s coming back he’s going to want to be the two and so I think Mel and OG will offset as the 3 four depending on the night um and and we’ll see what happens but the lineup combinations are going to be very interesting do you play Jaylen uh excuse me do you play Jaylen Brunson at the one do you play Hart or Devon chenzo with the two Bridges at the three ogan and noi at the four and maybe Julius Randle at the five do you go a little small ball do they bring back pressure aoua they they’re going to need a little bit more size and a little bit more uh you know beef in that front court so we’ll see yeah and that’s what they used to compete with Boston last year especially I think they only played Boston once with OG they kind of destroyed them in that game obviously he gets her into the playoffs and the team just completely crumbled healthwise after that point so we really haven’t seen these two teams go head-to-head at full strength since they made that big OG move there in New York so I’d imagine that could be opening night I would hope that would be opening that’d be a heck of a game but be you know what though KP probably I be there so I you have to take it with a little bit of grain of salt um but yeah it would certainly be intriguing regular season matchups yeah and you remember the opener last year he came out there and just destroyed the Knicks in that game and they did well without him last year they brought everybody back in that front court so I guess we’ll talk a little bit about the Celtics and what they did here I thought bringing back tman was huge I did not expect that I was surprised I thought he would get a little bit more than what he got but I clearly he values a winning culture he liked it there um but I agree with you Bobby I really did I thought he would get a little bit more yeah and he didn’t play a ton after the Celtics g at the deadline but obviously there’ll be plenty of time there for him with porzingis out and Horford’s going to have to hold things down cornette was pretty good for them last year another former Nick there do they have enough you feel like to sustain without porzingis for you know what could be up until Christmas time there or is this team you know going to struggle a little bit with porzingis being out completely cuz he missed a little bit of time last year but never this much I mean look I think certainly the older Al Horford gets you have to be a little bit more concerned I know he this guy’s found the Fountain of Youth I don’t know what he’s drinking if it’s wine if it’s extra milk uh you know for his commercials but to me there there is a little bit of concern there um but I think maybe Xavier Tillman saw that in free agency and said maybe I’m going to have an opportunity with Chris step sporing especially Beyond Horford’s career maybe if this is Horford’s last year yeah and you know what you bring up a valid point we don’t know that yet but it’s certainly plausible and so I think they’ve got enough to get by I think people forget that you know Drew holiday is an excellent rebounding guard they’ve got good positional size with Jaylen Brown and Tatum they can hold down the fort I think they’ve got enough overall uh to to get by and and and Thrive honestly still uh given their Ras of construction they’re still better on paper even without por than a lot of teams in the East yeah and they didn’t have to do too much this summer a lot of extensions Brad’s just gone extension crazy since he became GM yeah the Tatum WIS a slam dunk right the super max you to get that done I was a little surprised about Derek white he comes in at 126 you see guy signed for like 212 in George’s case and oan noi signed for over 200 so in my mind I thought he might go to free agency just see what’s out there maybe stay with Boston in the end for a little bit more than they could have extended for but they got that done pretty quickly and that was huge for Boston I thought I’ll tell you this Bobby this is the biggest thing I think people maybe have a misconception about with free agency essentially your own team has to want you and they kind of set the market I think unless it’s an Isaiah hartenstein situation where you have a big Suitor yeah and Paul George was going to get a Max no matter what right um except for the Clippers I guess I shouldn’t say that even though but to anybody outside of the Clippers he was getting a max if he was going anywhere so to me I think when you’re looking at those type of situations for Derek white for example you got to say to yourself well you know can he go for a little bit more maybe but is the juice worth the squeeze and I think for Derek being in this situation um he likes it essentially he’s kind of comparable money to Drew holiday anyway so about the same I you know I think that’s I think that’s fair um if another team maybe offered more than that that’s a lot of money like like certain guys Bobby on a team like Derek white is an Allstar in his role okay but is he an Allstar guy I don’t know I know he’s on Team USA reach that level at times but yeah but like consistently throughout a whole year I I I just think for him this was the best situation it worked out well for both sides um and I just I wasn’t totally surprised maybe as much because I think people think of free agency the grass is always greener on the other side not always like that in today’s NBA I feel like um you know the mid level even is not being used as much it seems like it’s very broken up star heavy at the top with the salaries and lower tier guys um you know since they’ve broken up the aprons and whatnot teams are more spending conscious except for like Matt ishia but pretty much yeah and the Celtics have in the future set themselves up for a big uh you know luxury tax bill and all that with all the extensions here and all the guys that they’ve had a pay so they’re going to have that come up in about a year from now I want to hit on that but have you heard thing about OA B because obviously he’s the only guy well should be Mah High look is as well but there’s only one roster spot and you would have to think after winning a championship the door would be open for him to come back it but he declined that player option and is looking around right now I guess I would say that there’s a possibility he does come back it’s not out of the question at all um from what I’ve heard so I mean you know still a little bit of time there’s no rush given where the market is right now but um there’s definitely a possibility that O’Shea brassette comes back to the Boston Celtics prize picks is a America’s number one daily fantasy sports app over 5 million active members all you do is pick more or into ,000 okay well with the Celtics is NBA champs the hoop action doesn’t stop though on prize picks women’s back basketball is still heating up with stars like Caitlyn Clark Angel Reese looking to make big names for themselves alongside a great like Brianna Stewart so here’s something you could do like here here’s what you could Wier this is something I like to do Caitlyn Clark for more than Tatum and brown can keep those guys around for a long time and try to build out different inovations to this team around them and I’d have to imagine that’s what they’re trying to do here with the two super Maxes but you sign that holiday extension that adds a little bit more the books long term white that adds just a little bit more and then you still have porzingis here at 30 for two more years so you mentioned the Suns they’re what 400 million this year mhm if the Celtics do a Hower extension which I know they have some interest in you’re talking like 500 million in 2026 for them so maybe if you’re a champion you eat that but I maybe maybe that’s why Wick maybe that’s why Wick is uh thinking of selling right now at this point because he’s worried about that that tax bill coming up but to me um to me my thing is like if you’re a real contendo you got to pay it yeah I I just don’t the revenue that you’re going to get from going to the playoffs winning the championship everything it should help offset those costs in theory I understand it’s an exorbitant amount of money you’re talking about down the line but as long as these guys are healthy I I think you continue to ride it out for as long as possible it’s so hard to build up to this point make all the trades they did and fit the roster you know salary cap wise woring about the first and second apron while you’re below it you got to shoot your shot for as long as you can you know eventually maybe could they move one of those guys not Tatum not brown I I really think it’d be hard for them to move Drew um you know especially as he’s be getting older but I still think he’s a great player you know Derek conceivably there’s plausibility there um KP in theory but again I I just I don’t think there’s an appetite for that ideally yeah and what we’ve seen this summer cuz I was interested to see how teams would handle that the teams that were in tough positions MoneyWise just basically let their guys go there were some minor dumps but there weren’t any major uh you know Star level contracts moving just because teams need to get off their guys so looks like teams are just waiting and seeing on that front and then maybe in a year I don’t know does Minnesota move Towns at that point as things get expensive you know that’s what I’m interested to see in the coming years ownership question as well too because and and whatnot yeah Phoenix stood the line so we haven’t seen any major players move yet in my mind uh since the second April went I think yet is a key word Bobby it’s going to happen eventually you would think down the line just you know we’ll see you one yeah um want to give a quick shout out to our sponsor here go to the game time app download that today our official ticket Marketplace uh use the code CS to get $20 off your first purchase over there of course terms apply you got WNBA going on right now MLB ton of stuff going on concerts and events you got the sphere here out in Vegas have you seen it yet I’ve seen it from afar it’s on my bucket to-do list uh you know my girlfriend was out here for half the trip we went out she wanted to see the Bellagio Fountains so we did that uh took her to ghost bar uh if you you guys don’t know it’s in the palms and I’m like oh yeah we’re going to see The View and everything they closed the patio we still saw it but to go out there um it’s a nice treat if you can do that out here for sure some some two Vegas attra action for me I’ll have to wait you to I would have done but I don’t know about dead and Company that’s that’s uh you before my time say so word to Bill Walton on that one but um I mentioned Hower he’s extension eligible right now he’s an interesting extension candidate you you know you’re going to do your holidays and whites and tatums of course there in the starting lineup uh but they seem to have interest in extending Houser as well and you mentioned like you want to keep your guys and just have them under contract and figure out what to do do later seems like they want to extend that all the way down the Hower not to minimize his impact he played in the finals and played well so I understand that 10 million-ish seems to be you know the number there maybe maybe that’s what one side wants I’m sure the other side wants a little bit more than that so could this happen and what do you think it would end up being MoneyWise in the end if a deal does get done I would say the Celtics would want to do something along the lines of pton Pritchard I don’t think that’s going to end up being realistic six yeah how much we six six more than that never mind I thought prer was at 8 million for a sec um so excuse me on that but I would say rer I mean definitely 10 plus I would think but honestly if I’m a guy like him anytime you try to do an extension with Team you’re going to want a minimum if you’re a roll guy more in the mid level or close to it so you got to go a little bit more maybe closer to 13 or higher I think in an ideal world he hits 15 and I feel like he would sign that uh you know tomorrow if he could but we’ve got a ways to go yeah for sure and he’ll remain extension throughout the summer I’ll throw one more at you around the league when you look at you mentioned the Knicks obviously they’re going to be a big threat in the East um I guess even extending it to the West who’s a contender maybe a couple different contenders that you feel like going to have the best opportunity to uh knock Boston off that Championship ledge because I has been a new Champion what each of the last six years now so it’s been tougher to repeat I mean Bobby I think when you look in the west I look at the Young legs I look at the Oklahoma City Thunder getting getting Alex Caruso they’ve brought the core back and then I look at Minnesota having a chip on their shoulder uh I think internally they’re going to realize that they have got to do this sooner than later you touched on Carl Anthony towns is getting more expensive that luxury tax bill what is ownership going to do with that uh I think the time is now for them that there’s got to be a little bit of a sense of urgency there um so to me that’s kind of what I’m looking at there uh those two teams but I think right now I would venture to say most people would say the Oklahoma City Thunder in the west Denver they’ve had some tough losses the last couple years Lo kcp Calvin boo you know is a firm believer that Christian Brawn is gonna replace his production uh they got pton Watson as well but kcp was a really clutch three and D guy in the playoffs it remains to be seen it’s an X Factor if Christian Brawn uh you know pton Watson can can replicate that with a heavier workload in the playoffs so I I like Denver obviously uh you know to have the the best player in basketball but I think overall from a team perspective I just think um they’ll come in with a chip on their shoulder but again Oklahoma City Minnesota they have the same chip on the shoulder they’re young they’re hungry and I feel like just with the the way the NBA’s been structured over the past I don’t know five plus years we’ve had different Champions I think one of these young teams could emerge I’ll throw one more you Milwaukee they didn’t do a ton this summer I like Donan R going there I’m not couple young draft picks here’s my thing with Milwaukee Bobby I think that one you need a healthy Brook Lopez uh you know there was a little buzz about him moving this summer I guess there just wasn’t the right deal no there wasn’t and I and I think when you look at Milwaukee you have to see like what trade assets you have and it’s Lopez poris Pat conon future picks um or excuse me the it would have been the Aj Johnson pick right um and and the pick that ended up being Tyler Smith and and that didn’t happen they’re always aggressive trying to improve and win now I think I just I just feel like they’re a little bit stagnant and I think Chris Middleton um you know due to injury it’s been tough for him to get back to that All-Star level and it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen seems more like he’s got to be on a minute restriction to maintain um his health throughout the season Giannis is still a great player and so is obviously Dame I think Dame will have a better year this year than last year it’ll be more acclimated uh you know he had to deal with some personal stuff going through his uh divorce and the move with with his kids so you know I think that had some role in it but ultimately um I I I just feel like they’re behind definitely the Celtics and the Knicks I think their health is going to be critical them in Philadelphia I feel like are in that next tier but you know to win a championship I I don’t think they’re going to end up being there Health always crucial appreciate Michael Scot for stopping by here at Summer League how long you here for him I’ve been here since Monday for Team USA
