I can’t see a world where they would come anywhere close to 7×7 (which could be a good thing even if he fit the team really well)

  2. I’m fine with the work we’ve done so far on our back end. Montour would have been nice but we just don’t have the cap for the size of contract that he got.

Maybe Liljegren finally takes a big step this year too (if he’s not traded). We’re paying him more than a 7th defenseman which is where I see many people slotting him in to. D-men take time to develop. I remember giving up Schenn, Gunnarson, and Stralman when they were young and they all went on to have pretty decent runs with other teams.

Best of luck to him but I think in a year from now, we’ll look back at articles like this and think “thank god that he didn’t sign here.” He’s a good player but people for whatever reason were treating him like he’s an elite d-man when he’s had one elite season offensively and is more of a solid #2 guy. Hell he wasn’t even the first or second best defender on Florida, Forsling and Ekblad are better

    Click bait.

I listened to the interview. He said there were “conversations” and that he had family and friends ask him to sign with the Leafs PREVIOUSLY.

“Conversations” is such an open-ended word here. That could have been as much as negotiating that fell apart at the last minute, to a 10 second phone conversation that said “how much? $7.5 Mil? Can’t do it… Bye.”

  5. “We had conversations” is not “close to signing.” Especially since it sounds like the conversations he had were with his family only and not the Leafs.

  6. Great, what is this the Ross Atkins media circus of we just missed. Who cares

Best of luck to him. One of my favourite players in the game right now.

    >It was intriguing, you know, in that week. There were talks

What I am a little more interested in is Montour outright admitting that players and teams talk before they’re officially allowed to

Everyone knows they do, but it’s not often openly admitted

  9. I understand the knee-jerk cope we Leaf fans can’t help but exhibit, but fact is adding Montour would have been the marquee move of the offseason. Right shot top-pairing d-man that we’ve been missing for the past 8 seasons with cup-pedigree.

All the reasons to not sign him – money, term, age – all apply far more to Tanev and OEL. Banged up, injury prone, best days behind him… same stuff we were saying about Hyman when he signed for what he was worth in Edmonton. Sometimes you have to pay a guy what he’s worth.

Not enough people realize how badly we need a strong point shot from D on power plays

  11. I’m not sure how they got the title based off that set of quotes. He didn’t sound like it was close at all.

It’s great that players still want to come to a team that exits in the first round for the last 8 years.

  13. Who tf cares…

Would I love him to be a leaf? Absolutely.

Did he choose us? He did not.

    Case closed, move on.

    😂

A Montour and Rielly pair would make me bust

  15. Frankly I would’ve lost my mind if we gave him in the ballpark of 7×7.

When was conversations considered close to signing? Fact is none of us know how far the conversations got.
