Toronto has no choice but to throw offers all over and see what sticks. When guys go Ufa they often prefer stateside and Vancouver is close to signing Zadorov. Is Tanev the best choice at 35? Not when he gets injured.
Noodles and O-Dog are right. Longer term is definitely the way to go with Tanev or any other stud player they bring on. If you low ball the guy too much he won't sign with the Leafs. Make the term and the $ are easier to fit into the cap. It could burn a bit, but the window is only open for a few more short years. Take advantage while we can.
