How Can Having Patrick Roy For a Full Season Help the New York Islanders Improve?

This season, the New York Islanders will have Patrick Roy behind the bench from the start of training camp. Today, we discuss two major ways that this can help the Isles improve both on and off the ice. Will it have enough of an impact to get this team to improve significantly? We’ll break that down on today’s show.

Plus, we look back at the very first shutout in New York Islanders history and believe it or not, it didn’t happen until their third season in the league. It involved a future Hall of Fame goalie and an expansion team. We look back at the first two shutouts in Isles history today.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Roy can make a difference by cleaning up the pk and figuring out how to best maximize scoring from a top 6 lacking a big time goal scorer. The bottom six is interchangeable. Big question is what if injuries knock out key guys? Roy needs to tighten the d up while playing aggressive-not sitting back. A lot needs to go right for roy to succeed. Injuries or a fall off from key guys plus a riser from below in east could do isles in. Its still up to louzer to improve the speed and scoring for roy. Get some better depth for injuries which can't be done with no cap room. With not much help in ahl all louzer can do is pick up a cheap waiver claim like with 2 last year if injuries hit. I hope roy didn't sign on for the run it back every season shit and can sway louzer to upgrade isles.

  2. Considering how he left colorado, yes, his second year will be better. Judging from coach Bednar 2nd season proves that. But I'll always doubt him now leaving in such poor fashion after winning two cups here. SAD, fyi he has an Avalanche to overcome…

  3. Totally different team with Patrick Roy, he a no joke type of guy, very excited to see the islanders hit the gate with him, thank you Gil !!!

  4. Can he I think we've def seen that he def can he came into the team that was in shambles and he turned it around big time I have faith in this team and roy as a coach bc he doesn't have to do damage control

  5. Good morning team! Gil, in my opinion, I think Roy is a coach that has helped a struggling Islanders team get to the playoffs. Lambert certainly wasn't "the guy." I'm excited that about Patrick Roy being behind the bench at the start of this new season. Wasn't he once voted coach of the year with Colorado? Seems he is the one that will get the best of of the team we have, but in my opinion we still need to improve, player wise. Thank you, Gil. Everyone, have a great weekend! Looking forward to seeing you all again soon. Until then. Let's Go Islanders!!

  6. Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? I think Patrick Roy will make a great impact on the team. He'll be starting from the beginning, he's very winning, and he wants things done his way. When The Islanders resigned Mike Reilly, he got better. When they signed Lou Lamoriello signed Anthony DuClair, he said 2 magic words to sweeten the deal PATRICK ROY. He resigned from Kyle McLane, who's got his father as an Assistant Coach. I hope he use that ad a get out of jail free card. The Islanders can and will also benefit once Patrick Roy lays down some ground rules. They have to play much better against teams that are way worse than them because they thought they were going to cruise. Bottom line, THEY MUST PLAY 60 MINUTES OF SOLID 🏒 , and Patrick Roy's just the Coach that make them do it. Back when they were terrible, The Islanders were on the wrong end of a shutout. They got their first shout out against Washington, who would be worse than them 5-0. The got their first shut put against MN. HAPPY 🎂, RAY GEREAU. Best game, 4/09/2000, they beat FL. Hear from you later, Gil, and LET'S GO ISLANDERS.

  7. This allows Roy to implement his systems and establish a team culture right from the get-go and players can fully understand and adapt to his strategies. Thanks for the great Podcast Gil. LGI

  8. He will be a very good assett for the Islanders and prove he can coach and bring the team to an opportunity tio be in the playoffs as a stronger force!

  9. Gil, you are correct. Last season they were only a few mistakes/collapses away from a really decent record. If the special teams had been mediocre they likely would’ve had a better record and possibly could’ve made it to the second round. Roy cleans up some major weaknesses, and he doesn’t need to improve on those significantly, they can be very competitive.
