If they were truly as close as it seemed… I'd wager they have lost less of their roster than Florida did. So I'd say sure, at least a top 4 favourite.
I hope I'm wrong but no, they're not the likeliest. The simplest reason being: the Panthers defied the odds by making it back to the final the year after losing in the final. No matter how good a team is, there's a reason it doesn't happen very often.
I wouldn’t be surprised if mcdavid takes a team friendly deal when it’s time to renew. You know he has wants to stay an oiler and win a cup. If he takes a team friendly deal then they have even more cap space to go get some supporting talent

To answer the title question: no. not in the slightest. The Oilers still lack scoring depth, they lack a competent defense as long as Darnell Nurse and Cody Ceci are taking valuable roster spots, and their goaltending is still rough, Skinner can be solid but very inconsistent and Pickard should not at all be in the NHL let along as a yearly back-up. They'll make playoffs because they have Draisaitl and Bouchard but they'll be out in the 2nd round probably.

Love how ppl hate on the oilers defense and goalie when they had a historic pk in the playoffs. That team woulda won the cup 95% of the time but florida is battle tested and just a whole other animal….and the oilers were 1 goal away.
