I think it’s pretty clear that Jani isn’t healthy at this point. If he was, the contract would be signed or another team would swoop in and sign him.
I think the reality at this point is that if Hakanpaa is going to get signed, it won’t be until after the rest of the roster gets sorted out. Right now we have 1.2M available to sign Robertson and go with a 13F 7D 2G lineup.
If we sign Hakanpaa to his 1.5M contract we likely are waiving/trading Timmins which would give us about 900K in cap space with a 12F 7D 2G lineup. It makes sense to wait on things if Jan isn’t healthy to start the season and then sign him once the dust settles on Robertson. That also doesn’t factor in on the Leafs making a slightly larger move if they plan to have Minten or Cowan on the roster which would probably mean moving someone like Jarnkrok to create a spot in the lineup in the top 9.
