Flyers might have 6 picks in the top 60. Do they use them as is, package to move up, or trade some for a stud to help MM now?

I would love to see them package them out to move up in the draft for a potential future 1C or 1D, but I think trading some to get a young player to help Michkov immediately is maybe more likely.

What do you want them to do?

What do you bet they actually do?

    I think a mix of both. Try to keep 2 1st and a 2nd and leverage a 1st and 2 2nds for a star.

I agree with the sentiment that TK’s extension is signaling that the rebuilt is not as long term/broad as originally planned with MM coming over. That said, Flyers find themselves with a young core with a decent ceiling, a very young potential stud, but NO present superstar to be found. IMO it’s either package the picks together for a 1C if possible or commit to the rebuild and keep them all and maneuver next draft. But to me choosing the middle ground is a death sentence for the roster

Trading up legitimately never happens can we please stop with that discourse. If it didn’t happen this year when the 3-14 picks were basically completely unknown it will probably never happen.

  4. Briere was rumored to have tried to trade up for either #4 or #7 this past draft. He had just as much trade ammo as he does now. It still wasn’t enough to close a deal.

Top 10 trade-ups are very rare. When they do happen, they usually have a player attached to them (Like TK could have been.) It’s silly to hinge getting help for Michkov on such an unlikely trade scenario

We have Columbus and Anaheim’s 2nd rounders, and if we miss the playoffs which they likely will as well, we’re probably picking 6 times in the top 50, potentially top 40. They should make every single pick we have on the board no matter what the order comes out to be. This draft is ridiculously deep, I wouldn’t risk it. Load up on multiple top guys and find a core you can build on.

The 2025 draft class is mostly Dmen and centers. You want a 1C guys? Wait it out. We’re going to be fine. We’re not tanking but this new staff is trying to build a foundation that can win for decades. That doesn’t happen overnight.

Use every pick, having a lot of ELCs is never a bad thing

Deep draft too. All we need is one of those 6 to hit

If they do anything but draft a player with every single one, I’d be disappointed. Signing TK didn’t magically end the rebuild. This is going to be the draft that defines it.

  8. Keep all six and use them. Make our system DEEP.

I still think this team is going to be a lot worse this season than people are assuming. I believe what we saw at the end of the season last year is closer to what next year will be like. There is also inevitably going to be growing pains with Michkov.

I want to see a competitive team just as much as the next guy, but my thought is we will have a top 10 pick next draft.

  10. The “help now” argument is so tired. Do they have *ANYTHING* close to a contending roster? Not by a mile. Their best forward couldn’t crack Florida’s top six. They have no #1 Dman. They really don’t have a #2 Dman. They don’t have a #1 Center. They *maaybe* have a passable #2 Center. Their goaltending is a speculative pile of magic beans.

If they are legitimately prioritizing “help now” v. how many many playoff rounds the team can credibly get four years from now, then this is just a completely butchered timeline.

I would prefer to see them move up in the draft even if it is not into the top 10 (moves in the teens happen pretty regularly).

Teams that have large caches of picks, and end up using them all, rarely see great returns. That amount of guys usually leads to opportunities being spread too thin and no player really being given the opportunity to fail and struggle. That is why when you see teams with great pipelines based on a large number of prospects rarely convert that into a ton of NHLers. Take a look at the Kings, who around 2020-21 had 10+ guys who would have been top 3 in most systems around the league. Very few panned out, and most of the ones who did have panned out for other teams like Vilardi and Faber who got opportunities they couldn’t in LA.

Think of the 6th best player the Flyers pick in the draft. What is the likelihood that player goes on to be a contributing NHLer. People talk about picks like they are lottery scratchers, but they are much more like plants that need proper care. Development and deployment are key to getting quality player. Turning 6 top 50 picks into 3 picks between 12-25 likely yields the same amount of NHLers, but those players will have a better starting point.

  12. Looks like they also have the rights to Kolosov to play with.

If we can somehow come away with a Roger McQueen+ prospect (it’s early but he looks promising) and a couple kids who can play 400+ games for the Flyers than I believe they will be ok moving forward. But it feels like they really need to hit on at least 2 kids (with top 6/top4 potential) or the prospect pool will be a major issue. Because they went all in on this draft, the worry I have is if they don’t manage to to at minimum draft something close to a McQueen talent than this prospect pool could be very mid (at best)for the foreseeable future. It’s possible that even adding a top prospect like that might still not add enough high end skill. My guess is they somehow end up with a top 10 pick this year. And possibly another 15-20 pick. I’d be surprised if they end up making all 6 picks when all is said and done.

I am of the belief that they still really need a couple more legit 1st Line/Pair potential in the system moving forward. I really hope they are able to come away with 3 this year. I don’t believe that’s realistic, but one can hope for our own gem of a draft we all look back on.

I personally would love to add a more immediate return thru trade, but I would be real picky on the talent level coming in return. For example I’m not real interested in a Necas/zegras unless you are getting a great deal. Assuming there isn’t a trade to be made for a player, I’m most likely trying to use picks to move up and grab as much high end talent as you can, wherever the scouts think that cut off is. It’ll be interesting to watch how the talent in the draft this year will compare to the past few drafts.

No, keep developing a beast of a franchise and then turn those assets into upgrades when the time is right.

I like the idea of having Tippett-Couturier-Michkov on a line, showcasing speed on wings, defensive responsibility down the middle, allowing Michkov to do his thing. Realistically though, can see Torts play him down the lineup to get favourable matchups while he gets used to NHL play.

  15. Read this thread and take a shot everytime you come across the word “deep” lol

  16. I would be shocked if Briere doesnt make at least one big package for a center.

It would be insane, like many are actually suggesting in the thread, if we kept all of them to just load up B level depth projected prospects 3+ yrs down the road rather than package some together for proven core top 6 center that we *badly* need.

  17. Strong_Weird_9358

I am sure Briere will do his due diligence on all of these options. If there are 6 players we are excited about through 60 picks, we go that route. If there is a top draft pick that really excites us, they will try and move up. If the draft seems weaker by this time next year and a top talent becomes available via trade, we go that route.

Thats the beauty of having 6 picks, you have the ammo to be flexible and keep all your options open.

If I was a betting man, I think they will try and move up the draft for a player they are really excited about. Maybe trade a current player/prospect and two firsts for a high end first. End up taking 4 players in the top 60 with one being a top-tier talent early in the draft.
