Montreal Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes announced on Tuesday that the team has agreed to terms on a two-year, $2.6 million contract with defenseman Arber Xhekaj. The deal, covering the 2024-25 to 2025-26 seasons, will pay him an average annual salary of $1.3 million.
Xhekaj, who played 44 games with Montreal last season, recorded 10 points (3G, 7A) and ranked second on the team with a plus-6 differential. The 6-foot-4, 240 lb defenseman led the Canadiens with 81 penalty minutes and topped all team defensemen with 125 hits.
The 23-year-old blue-liner also appeared in 17 games with the Laval Rocket in 2023-24, contributing three goals and eight assists. Xhekaj originally joined the Canadiens organization when he signed a three-year, entry-level contract on October 4, 2021.

Great news Coach.
Great Deal too!
Great signing
Great signing by Hughes!
Great signing, time and $$, without counting what he brings, we saw 2 arbor's . good and bad/sent to laval, he's got good skills,2 years to develop them is perfect.
Love this guy great signing. Everybody knows when he is on the ice. We need more toughness and he puts us more than halfway there.
The contracts Hughes has signed brings great value long term I do not see the top line being the top line in the future with salary cap going up the habs will be able to build a big strong team that will compete for Lord Stanley for many years as I think you will see Suzuki and Caulfield that a great start to a second line there will be a big powerful number one center come into the fold might even be Kirby dach
Hi Coach, Amazing signing!!! I was hoping it would be for 3 years.
Good. Surprised it was for 1.3.
..the Habs need to let him play..fighting is crippling his progress..Habs need more size and attitude..
Should have been 3 years
We are fortunate to have Gorton & Hughes at the helm for our HABS, along with MSL and the development and support staff. Not to mention the incredible player depth that we have attained so far.
What a contrast from before! The rebuild is going forward slow and steady. One can certainly feel confident as HABS fans that we are in good, competent and professional hands.
Molson obviously made the right choice and it's starting to pay off in dividends.
