Ryan Poehling’s NHL Hat Trick Debut, Bob Cole’s Farewell – YES, SIR!! (2020)

I’ve been watching hockey since age one. Never in the history of the NHL has a rookie played his first ever NHL game, against their rival, shortly after his physical, the final game of the season, the night after elimination, just as the national sportscaster – Bob Cole – retires after 50 years, and put up a hat trick, tying the game with two minutes left, hats showering down, in only 11 minutes of ice-time.

And, then he got the game winning goal on the last shot of the season, in a shootout. The young prospect, unveiled by the most famous organization in hockey on game 82, simply to say thank you to the fans. 49 shots apiece! That was wilder than Auston Matthews’ four-goal first game, who was looking on, and brought a tear to my eyes. If only my mom were alive to see that. That was a Rocket Richard entrance to the NHL. I’m Ryan Poehling. You say goodbye. I say Hello!

THIS is why we love our game. In all its history, and future promise.

  1. What a fantastic game to watch!! Win or lose that game was best all year. Lindgren with some awesome saves despite the 5 goals, and Poehling, my oh my, that Poehling. Can't wait for a Young Gun of this kid!!

  2. Poehling did great in the World Juniors so glad to see him doing even better in his NHL debut. What a Coincidence he scored 4 goals in his rookie debut just like a certain Toronto Maple leaf in his 1st NHL game a few years earlier.

  3. Bob's last broadcasting words: "And that is all she wrote". See the look on his face as he turns to Greg Millen and utters those last few words? He wasn't just talking about the end of the season, he was talking about more than 5 decades of broadcasting magic. Man I miss Bob Cole!
