It’s a good move , Tavares is on his last year of his contract and he’s a professional he will take it fine. He will be happy to hand it over , less pressure on John as well.
This has been Auston’s team for years. About time he gets the C. Even just to have a different voice lead the room. I hope he and Berube get along well. The new additions on D and a better coaching structure can only be good for the leafs.
It’s perfect cuz first few years Matthews’s wasn’t ready for captain . He’s been ready for a few years now , so it’s good timing . John is a professional and he will be content about it

Maybe it would have sounded better if JT said he wanted to give the C willingly to Mathews rather than making it sound like the brass was stripping him of it.
If im the Leafs im not bringing Tavares back unless hes willing to take 3.5M-4M per on a 4 year deal. Hes going to need to be a 3rd line centre theyre going to need to upgrade their 2nd line centre role. They cant be paying a 3rd line centre 6-8M per year
Disagree with the move classless act by the leafs organization should've waited when he wasn't a leaf anymore as i know leafs never replaced the captaincy while a player is a captain in the past leafs didn't always have the best player as captain but the mature player just like george armstrong in 1967 at 38 yrs old then retired and got new captain ,aweful tread they copy san jose classless move leafs john stil a good player.😢

Leafs are close to making conf finals or cup finals. Need big trade and unload all pics or prospects and they would be deep. Kampf, jannkoert, minten and pics for great 3rd line c like Jenner and deadline D with refined salary. Woll and stolarz I like.

I'm not sure why they didn't just wait one more year and give it to Matthews after Tavares's contract expired. Not sure what the point of this is. There are more important things for the team to deal with than this.
