Likely signals JT will be resigning with the Leafs at a much reduced rate and the reduced rate will match the reduced role. JT as the captain was a mixed bag, I think this is a good move.

I think that auston matthews is the best ever leafs player already so other players look up to him more than theu do tavares so his influence on the team would be much greater and more positive
Didn't Chucky want the 'C' from the flames? Didn't get it and he wanted out. Matthews signed a short deal and will demand top dollar in a few years. Asking for the "C" was just another leverage point and the leafs knew they had to give it or further risk losing him when his current deal expires. Its not a big deal and the whole Tavares sympathies forgets that this is a business and that people are involved. The leafs haven't had "it" under JT and maybe with Matthews as top dog they think that shake up can get them over the hump. No disrespect to JT, but this is a gutsy move and will be remembered favourably if the Leafs make the cup final or win the damn thing. So lets see how it plays out!

If Harold Ballard was still around, nothing would surprise me. Do you remember when Harold disagreed with the NHL about putting names on the back of jerseys? He put white letters on their white jerseys and blue letters on their blue jerseys so nobody could see the name. Brilliant or just a narcissist, you loved him or hated him, there was no in between. With JT, I can’t imagine current management doing something so disrespectful, there is a lot more to this story I suspect.

Thoughts? Perhaps this re-branding is just symbolic since they are otherwise keeping the status quo, aside from the coach. Perhaps it will suggest to the fans that something is different moving forward for this season. A change in attitude, rather than a change in players. Now if they'd made Mitch Marner captain then you'd have a story!

If Tavares was the one to first offer his C to Matthews, I would feel like it's due to the fact that he realizes the Leafs haven't had much success in the playoffs under his captaincy. Will this change instantly make them legit cup contenders, no. But it might give the room different, greater vibes, which hopefully in turn results in greater success for the team.
With the ultra intense media in Toronto, this is like throwing a grenade into a room filled with nitro. Either the team so desperate to appear like they are making changes, when they are not, or they really want Tavares out of the picture. Either way this officially kicks off the Groundhog Day Reality Tour in Toronto. Running it back one more time.

Allegedly John Tavares has a play in this, I wouldn’t rule that out as a truth. Like sure you could force him to agree to it for the PR of not stripping him, which honestly is of the leafs brand, they care about PR reception.
However, those 2 players are genuinely close, maybe it was suggested and he honestly thought about it. Like at the end of the day, if they weren’t forcing his hand now, he probably didn’t want the year to end with him getting stripped. Simply put 🤷♂️
