So basically what the title says. Would it make sense to test the water for a goaltender of his talent? What would be the price with our assets that could make the trade done?
Or
Are we just fine waiting to see if one of our goaltenders pans out?

You do realize that we have an abundance of good goaltenders in the pipeline right? Why add more unnecessary pressure?
Even if say Primeau doesn’t pan out. There is Fowler.
The way goaltending as an entire profession has plateaued in the last 4-5 years, I wouldn’t invest any significant assets to acquire one.
Nashville is asking for way too much considering the fact that he’s an unproven goalie and teams have won Stanley cups with goaltenders that just ended up being hot at the right time.
Jesus Christ Vegas won the cup with Adin Hill in net… Why on earth would you spend a lot for a goalie lol
Fowler (they’ll still want a future prospect with good pedigree for the later year of Saros) Adam Engstrom/Oliver Kapanen and a 2026 1st rounder for Askarov and Nashvilles 3rd next year.
I don’t know if thats enough to get it done, but I wouldn’t be prepared to pay more than that.
It is said that there was a proposal for Askarov to Montreal at the 2023 draft for our 5th overall pick. If that is the kind of value they are putting on Askarov, I am not interested.
We already have two goalies right now. No opportunity for him. Although to be fair, Askarov was one of the best goalies in the AHL last season. Will his skills translate well into the NHL ? That remains to be proven.
If there was a spot available and depending the price, maybe ? But apparently, Nashville asks the Moon for him, and I highly doubt Trotz would accept a 7th round pick in exchange.

EDIT : Besides, we have a few goalie prospects in the pipeline like Dobes and Fowler. I’d rather wait for them to pan out than trade for an unproven prospect.

Askarov hasn’t proven anything at the NHL level yet. Imo until a goalie plays ~100 games they might as well be a mystery box. He could be Price, but he could also be Fucale.
Unless the price comes waaaaay down I’m not touching that with a 10 foot pole.

I’d be fine with Askarov if Nashville drops their reported ask, but I’m not giving up a first for an unproven goalie no matter how good their pedigree is.

Montembeault Primeau and Fowler… why?
He has a higher ceiling than Primeau and can push Monty. If the price is right then I’m all over him.

I think in some other rumors the ask was for a similarly skilled young forward prospect
Considering Askarovs skill that’s a top tier forward prospect so like a Demidov let’s say which is a hard no from me (and likely every team) which is why it hasn’t happened
If the ask softens id be open to trade more fringe pieces of the core for him
Mailloux, Roy, Barron, Newhook and Hage for example (not all but examples of fringe pieces of the future core)
I am a diehard Habs fan, but Montembeault and Primeau ain’t it. We need a goalie that can steal a few games. We won’t find another Carey Price, but we need a better starter.
Askarov has an Hasek vibe to him. Whoever lands him and let’s him pan out will win in the end.
