Where i lost confidence with 34 was the Columbus series in the bubble. He should have smoked Pierre Luc Dubois in the head to head but only ended up even or only slightly better. Montreal had no legit first line centre and we lost that series. Last year against Boston there was no Bergeron and still Matthews was medicore save one game. And no i dont want to hear the injured excuse because the previous 6 years give him no cred when it comes to post season. Lots of you are going to post below what about Ovechkin and yzerman who won later in their career…lots of remain unconvinced
Change the captain (window dressing), but the Leaf problem remains. No top number 1 defense pair, and a proven goalie that will steal games now and again. The Habs in their rebuild concentrated on defense and goalies, and will end up back in the cup final before the Leafs.
Other sports from around the world (soccer, cricket, rugby, Aussie rules, etc.) change captains with no fuss. Hockey is unique in that an aging, declining player playing bottom six or bottom pair minutes can still be the captain of a team.
Matthews is an elite player no doubt but he’s not captain material! This is reflected by his short term contracts at maximum pay! How is a team supposed to build around him when he’s going to make millions more next year than McDavid? Many great players have taken less money in order for their team to get better talent around them but Matthews hasn’t understood that 😢. It was obvious that the core 4 just cared about their contracts.
1- I like making Mathews the captain and will limit my praise/criticism when he is in the role. 2- I like some of the additions this year (new coach, Tanev, etc). 3- I hate that the big 5 is still in tact and that 1 or 2 were not moved (the player(s) and more importantly the salary). To me, the keepers are Mathews, Marner (yes Marner – his skill is irreplaceable) and Nylander. Tavares and Rielly and their salaries go to change the culture. Frees up $14 million (retain $4 as a sweetener) Ise the money to bolster blue line and depth up front. 4- Shanny should follow Tavares lead and step down. Have Treliving report directly to the new wonderboy MLSE CEO so he gets a clear view of the team.
I hope for the best and am excited about the new captain and coach combo. But the core issue of the big 5 still being together worries me

Guess that means Mathews is gonna score more in the playoffs?
