Oilers Trade Ceci and a 3rd to the Sharks for Emberson

The Oilers are trying to create cap space with this move. The Sharks get a veteran defender which is always a good move for a rebuilding team.

  1. The only reason Ceci has any regard as a defenseman is that every hockey fan has that one fun uncle that liked Canadian Club maybe a little too much.

  2. Oilers need to keep broberg for replacement for Elkom in 2 years time I know it's a bit of gamble but I don't see Oilers getting a better defenseman with as much upside on the market

  3. Oilers should have let both the offer sheeted players walk. Broberg is the overrated defenseman in all of these moves, not Ceci. The money they are going to overpay to keep them is going to result in the Oilers not being able to keep Draisaitl and McDavid. It would be much better to get a few draft picks and gain over $7 million in cap space room. No chance Drai or McD stay now, NONE!

  4. Sharks add a top 4 D, acquire a 3rd round pick, and clear out some of the logjam of mediocre defensemen. Good move by Grier.

  5. Oilers fans think adding a RHD with 30 games is a win. I think they're hopeful. The D was their weakness last year, now it's under siege. We'll see

  6. Oilers D has been massively weakened this offseason. Going to be a dose of harsh reality to Oilers fans when this team fails to make the playoffs. Same as 2006 is about to happen. Lose the Stanley Cup in game 7 and then miss the playoffs for a decade. 2nd Decade of Darkness incoming, as the Oilers can no longer afford Drai or McDavid, and they will be playing in large market NHL cities like New York, LA, or Philly within 3 years from now.

  7. The fact that the Oilers got more than a bag of used pucks for the human pylon that is Cody Ceci is a win for them.

  8. Baffled at the arrogance of Oilers fans all summer, talking as if the Oilers making the playoffs is a foregone conclusion. Going to be some bitter dose of humble pie awaiting them potentially. Especially with the hits to their lineup they are taking.

  9. Just food for thought, let us not forget that a teams unity and ease to play with one another is sometimes better than a shiny new toy. Will the Oilers survive this off season?

  10. Dont care as long as the oilers choke again. 1 day they will win again but I hope I'm in the ground when it happens.

  11. You Oilers fans all seem to be coping a seething over the lose of Ceci. You may be posting he's no big loss, and was a pylon, etc, but it's not reality. Bargaining and dismissal of Ceci are both steps in your denial. Keep letting your core move away, and enjoy 10th seed in the west next season.

  12. Ceci is actually a case of a addition by subtraction for Edmonton. If Cecil struggled that bad on a cup contending team (Edmonton) just imagine how much he’s gonna struggle with San Jose.

  13. As an Oilers fan, Emberson sounds like a great return for Ceci and plus the cap space freed up, happy Oilers fan here.

  14. The Oilers are just trying to push the inevitable rock further down the path here. Reality, and let's address this now, the Oilers are losing either Draisaitl or McDavid. They can't afford both.

  15. The Red Wings had to add a 2nd round pick to trade Walman, a more promising d-man than Ceci. Grier doing Bowman a big favor by only asking for a 3rd round pick.

  16. Tbh. I think you should take a closer look at Emberson. He does A Lot of things really well, is a quick learner and he competes.
Also. A 3rd round pick from Ed is like an early 4th in the grand scheme of things

  17. Ceci is a much better defenseman than Broberg. Bowman is already downgrading the team. Calling it now, Oilers don’t recover from this deal.

  18. It's a fair trade for both teams.

Oilers shed some salary and get a 3rd pairing/spare right shot defenseman.

Sharks get a veteran player / trade deadline trade assist and an extra pick. Plus Sharks need to get over the cap floor.

Still a good move even if Oilers let Broberg and Holloway go to St. Louis. They need cap space badly.

  19. Buddy, ceci is not good..he killed us all playoffs…oiler fans wanted him gone..the fact oilers only gave up a 3rd to move him but also got a former 3rd round D man in return that has played nhl mins?,sorry that's a win for edm

  20. Alot of media are saying the Ceci trade is so Broberg can be matched, not convinced either will be. You give Broberg 4.6, Bouchard deserves way more which he will get soon because of his contract status but that means he will get more because Broberg gets 4.6M.

Holloway, as good as he played at times during the playoffs, he still has yet to turn out. In my mind, the Jeff Skinner signing would have been money for Holloway and part of Broberg.

No guarantee as you needed to clear cap space before the season and if you wish to make moves during the season, you need space.

Ceci was could not play with Nurse and Nurse himself is on the second pairing at this point. 3. something for a 3rd pairing D? Mighty expensive. Oilers D has taken a hit big time. Was appaled when all that money went to forwards and not one D other then Josh Brown was signed.

Want Broberg to stay, but not at 4.6M but that is the situation. I like Holloway but I remember another Oiler infamously getting a reward for playoff performance then bombing under contract: Fernando Pisani. Holloway didn't quite light it up like Pisani but so far to me, is not worth 2.2M.

Damned if you do, damned if you do not. Stanley Cup winning teams have young and vets, mix of expensive and value contracts. Not many value contracts left in Edmonton.

Big Oilers fan, big time dissapointed. At this point, management is banking on McDavid, Draisaitl and forwards replicating offense and team D play from last season, Skinner becoming consistent (which in crunch time he still isn't) and a weaker D punching above their weight due to Coffey's coachig being an elixor. We shall see during the season but it feels like playing with one hand tied behind one's back from puck drop in October. Not sure you get Tyson Barrie on a cheap deal as some news media suggest. I remember him not being good defensively.
