[Friedman] Seattle is working on getting an extension done with 2023 Calder Trophy winner Matt Beniers. Sounds like it’s in the area of 7 x $7M, probably around $50M.

I guess everyone is back from the cottage with all the news this week

Interesting, so going the long term for “cheap” instead of a bridge deal. Hopefully the vote of confidence is warranted and this proves to be a nice team friendly deal.

$7 x 7 is entirely reasonable given the rising cap, especially if the Kraken think Beniers’ offensive ceilling looks more like his 22-23 output than 23-24.

edit: Kraken have $6.4M in projected space right now so they might have to move someone to fit a ~$7M Beniers. https://puckpedia.com/team/seattle-kraken . They also only have 12 F and 7 D on the current roster so they could use extra space to add a 14th F.

I feel you should lock up young, talented players like Beniers for as long as possible. They never get cheaper. This is good news.

not angry at this at all. the longer we lock him the cheaper he gets and it incentivizes him to pus his performance to take advantage of the larger future cap.

I like it. I think he bounces back this season

  7. MisterMyAnusHurts

Hopefully this means they’re also moving Tanev out.

Let’s get Kraken on the contract.

    *I’ll see myself out*

This is a steal right now but it’s highway robbery in 3 years time

Just got the app alert .. I’d say it’s official news now…

  11. SactownKorean

Good deal for both sides imo. Won’t be long before 7×10 is the new 7×7, the last three years will feel like a bargain

  12. Electrical-Okra3644

Done and inked. 7.1M for 7 years

For anyone saying we have to move someone, according to puckpedia, with Mahura as the only scratch, we’re just under cap.

  14. I was expecting 6×6 if they went with term, so this is right in line with that.

This has the potential to be one of the best contracts in the league in a year or two (although I guess *every* contract technically has that potential)

ME: *buys Beniers authentic sweater in 2023*

ME THE PAST FEW MONTHS: *sweating with mild concern*

ME NOW: *relieved, mostly; now he just needs to find his game again*

Time will tell if this is a good move or not. After last season, this is a serious gamble. If he rebounds and plays the way we have seen at his best, then this is a steal. If he continues to play like last season it’s going to be an anchor holding us back.

All this moving Tanev out is nonsense, would rather move Gourde or Gru unless there is a substantial trade coming back Seattle’s way with Tanev.

Gourde and Gru both have 5m+ hits and Gourdes contract is also up next year like Tanev. Tanev had a great showing for Canada where Gourde seems to be slowing down and showing his age unlike Tanev (same age).

I don’t want to lose either of these guys but I think Tanev has more upside AND is 1.5m cheaper. I’m really hoping Tanev is around for new coach & offensive scheme.

The best part about this news is that I don’t have to come to this sub reddit every morning to see if there is any news on Beniers.

  19. BayAreaKrakHead

Turbo is gone and probably Gourde. Bring up Winterton. Hayden plays 4C with Kartye and Winterton on the wings

  20. Go_Hawks12

If he returns to form from his Calder year and exceeds those numbers consistently, this is a steal.
