THATCHER DEMKO INJURY REHAB UPDATE

Rick Dhaliwal suggested that there’s a chance that Thatcher Demko might not be fully healthy for the start of training camp next month.

That could necessitate the Canucks bringing in a veteran goalie on a PTO.

  1. This is concerning. Canucks need to get off to a good start again. Winning most of the first 20 games makes it much easier down the stretch going into the playoffs. Demko-level performance is key to success especially with a defense group that isn’t as strong as the start of last season. That said, Demko is injury prone and the team needs to build a replacement for the future. Could be Silovs, but he really doesn’t have much experience at the NHL level (playoff performance isn’t the same as the regular season grind of 55-60 starts over the full season, playing nearly every other day).

  2. Demko's recurring knee injury is starting to get on my nerves. If you put Demko with knee injury in a math equation … the result is, getting the back-up to start, 3rd goalie backs up back-up, and down the line we start to scramble for more goalies if the injury dominos on goalies happen. Would it also suggests that Demko have bad knees in general??? I hope not. We witnessed in the playoffs when he got injured, DeSmith and Silovs stepped in. The next domino to fall was a DeSmith injury and Silovs takes over the reign between the pipes, but with DeSmith backing-up. The next domino to fall was if Silovs were to get injured was getting Nikita Tolopilo, an call-up from Abbotsford, to take over. Koodos to both DeSmith and Silovs for carrying the boat while Demko went to recover from his injury, BUT we cannot afford an injury domino effect on our goalies. Our time to win is now.

We need a fully healthy Demko for the playoffs. If another injury to Demko means another amount of time with Silovs taking over, we should start looking for someone who is durable and can carry the boat to help the Canucks be successful.

  3. I think we need to rebuild our goalie situation Demko is like glass .. it either we get him healthy and trade him an go after a really good kid in the draft

  4. Clay ur a good guy and all but this sounds like you are manipulating the media a bit. No on purpose of course but to me it’s sounds more like they are protecting demko with the no return time so he doesn’t get hurt again. I’m just clearing this up because people panic thinking he’s hurt again when it’s just precautionary. No just think you should probably clear that up in the air

  5. So i am not too concerned yet as training camp has not started but if we need a new goalie I am concerned for the Canucks and how far would they go

  6. The thing to remember is this: The report from Dhaliwal is that the Canucks are looking at offering a PTO to a free agent goaltender. Everything else is speculation and inference. It's the offseason. Outlets want clicks. Lots of people now believe that the team is hiding something about Demko's recovery, but no credible source has actually reported on that. It's just outlets playing a game of telephone with the original Dhaliwal interview. The team has plenty of reasons to want another goalie that are completely unrelated to Demko's status. FO is setting a precedent of having airtight opsec, and nobody has any incentive to make Demko's status public knowledge. So by default it doesn't get leaked and reported on.

  7. Bottom line, Demko is not the future in net for the Canucks. Either he stays great, then he becomes too expensive. Or he develops a chronic injury, in which case we'll need to sign a replacement. It's a shame.

  8. Hopefully this is a phase of being injury prone. It keeps happening we may need another starter. Two more years of continued injuries then I'd start to worry.
