Could the Nashville Predators Get $4 Million Back from the Ryan Johansen Trade?

GM Barry Trotz traded center Ryan Johansen to the Colorado Avalanche prior to last season and then Johansen was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers at the trade deadline. On today’s Locked On Predators we discuss the Flyers’ decision to terminate Johansen’s contract and what that could mean for Nashville. We walk through the process that Johansen and the Flyers will go through to settle their dispute and discuss how this situation may potentially be resolved. What should the Predators do if they are able to recoup $4 million dollars? We also revisit Yaroslav Askarov’s public request to be traded, and finally we play a Fun Friday game of Takes from a Hat.

  1. I'll never forget. Alexander Carrier scoring last year against the islanders at home. Snapped the defenders stick in half, over the goaltender and in the net as he wiffed on it. All in one motion. Locked in my Brian forever. Predators for life.

  2. I totally agree with you about Asky. I hope he realizes the mistake he has made and this all works out. Otherwise, he could end up in the KHL.

  3. Here's the thing with Askarov and his drafting in 2020, David Poile's taken a lot of flack and criticism (as has Trotz) but this was a value pick and actually, a smart pick, because the guy is talented and definitely worthy of a first rounder because the Preds draft philosophy (and in general a lot of draft philosophies in the league) is taking the best talent available. If you are drafting for "need" then that could come back to bite you–especially if you are reaching for a player just because you need a certain position. You take the talent and work out the logistics later. I'll add, not just to polish Ann or Emma's apples (not that they need it)—extremely fair for Askarov and his camp to be questioned. If Askarov wasn't happy what he should have done was NOT made this demand public (or private lol) and reported to Milwaukee. Dominated…and then turned to Trotz and said (behind the scenes with his agent Milstein) and said "I'm not seeing a spot for me–what's the plan–if it's going with Saros I want to be traded"—compare in a different way to the Ryan McDonagh situation (although Ryan is a veteran mult-year professional Stanley Cup Champion, etc). Ryan expressed a desire to return to Tampa and Trotz honored the request but Ryan was a veteran and handled it in a professional way. In all this, not slinginng mud at Askarov but SOMEHOW this demand "leaked" to Kevin Weekes–so SOMEONE (either Askarov or someone in his camp) made this known to Weekes and the Weekes repeated this on social media. I don't think that came from Nashville or anyone in the Preds organization.

  4. Its perfectly fair to say Askarov's move was dumb. It objectively was. He wants a trade fine, but to say you won't show up for the AHL team is a red flag and tells everyone this is the kind of entitlement that I bring to your team. It's unprofessional and immature

  5. Ann – what did you say your dog’s name was? My dog is named Miika (Not Salomaki) and I thought you said the same thing!

  6. I totally agree with you about Asky. I hope he realizes the mistake he has made and this all works out. Go Preds! 💙💙💛💛
