Demko, Podkolzin, Blais, Clark and more big changes for the Canucks

Matt and guest co-host Irf Gaffar unpack a busy week for Canucks news. The guys talk Thatcher Demko and what to do if he’s not ready for camp/preseason/start of season. They discuss the prospect of adding a goalie like Kevin Lankinen, how much Demko can be trusted going forward, Artus Silovs’ workload and the demotion of Ian Clark from director of goaltending to development coach/scout. Other topics include the signing of winger Sammy Blais, the promotion of Marko Torenius to goaltending coach, Roberto Luongo’s day with the Cup and the Canucks being the best-looking team in the NHL.

Frank Corrado says he’d be worried if Demko misses camp/preseason. He discuss Silovs having to play more, a potential Lankinen signing, Clark’s role changing, the Podkolzin trade with Edmonton and the Blais signing.

Harman Dayal says the Canucks don’t need everything to go right to be a playoff team and the season does not hinge on Demko’s health. Harman likes Lankinen but says Jiri Patera is interesting, too. His eyebrows are raised by the Clark move; has some confidence with Silovs playing a tandem workload. He also talks Podkolzin trade, Blais and the looming showdown between Daniel Sprong and Nils Höglander to play on Elias Pettersson’s wing.

  1. Time, time, time. Whatever it takes for a playoff healthy Demko. Trust Rutherford to know what he's got in the health of this player and what options he has or needs to create for late spring. Jim, take your senior vitamins. Jim n Patrick you've earned our confidence and trust.

  2. Play arturs as many games as necessary to start the season and ease demko in..1st 15 games demko should only play 5 games and assess from there.

  3. Demko just needs to not be relied on early and not push himself in practice and if he can get to 100 percent healthy, that is what will be best for canucks chances come playoff time..seeding really doesn't matter in the pacific division…you are gonna get a really good team or a great team regardless .

  4. Lol Irf saying he wouldnt peel a 1st for Askarov because we have Silovs is CRAZY lol. I dont care if they both have limited nhl experience, that DOES NOT make them the same lol

  5. Wrong Harm

Canucks cannot wether not having Demko they ran the percentages last year and without another top 4 offensive D they are in danger of misding TGE pkayoffs from Not generating more offense!

  6. Demko isn't the problem, as I see it. Demko having to constantly have to do the splits and move post-to-post, over-extending himself for 50+ games per season, that's the problem. Any goalie would have trouble with his workload. In other words, I think that the problem is the D primarily, team defence as a secondary problem. Tocchet has often mentioned that this is a problem for Demko (or any other goalie). I think that Demko overworks and he needs to be backed off, less games, better team D.

It also seems like Demko is super-competitive and just wants to play the max number of games. That may not be a best idea.

  7. No dont trade hoglander, just starting to come into his own, just lacks the experience which is why he was scratched in the playoffs. He and petterson just started getting good chemistry together. Add debrusk to that line and canucks may have 2 #1 lines

  8. Its funner to watch the Canucks without watching/listening to this stuff, mute the intermissions and ceremony puck drops. Your welcome

  9. Höglander is the trade chips that the Canucks will use for Rasmus Andersson, hog will be Mangiapane’s replacement.
