Ovechkin Scores 4 vs Tampa (12/10/2013)

December 10, 2013 – After going down 3-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first period, it seemed as though the Capitals were in for a loss. The Great 8 entered the matchup with 22 goals in 28 goals – the second-best goal-scoring start of his career and would score his 23rd off a face-off late in the first period, but a Capitals win still appeared unlikely. Down 4-2 in the second, the Capitals were given an opportunity with a 5-minute major powerplay after Tampa’s Richard Panik boarded Karl Alzner. Ovechkin would make quick work of the man advantage, scoring his second of the night less than 10 seconds into the powerplay. He would add another a few minutes later to complete the hat trick and tie the game, passing Peter Bondra for the most powerplay goals in franchise history in the process. However, the Lightning would take back the lead in the third period and it appeared as if the captain’s heroics would not be enough to save the Capitals this time. Ovechkin, of course, had other plans. With less than a minute to go and the goalie pulled, he received a pass in his office and let go his signature one-timer past Tampa goalie Ben Bishop to tie the game once again. It was Ovechkin’s first 4-goal game since his legendary 4-goal performance against Montreal in 2008. The Capitals would prevail in the shootout to complete the thrilling comeback victory in what is for many Caps fans that season’s most memorable game.
