I know this is the Islanders subreddit, but this feels a bit bigger than just fandom.

What the fuck happened?

His sister’s wedding is supposed to occur this weekend. It is so incredibly tragic.

RIP. So tragic and sad. I live in NJ and I see the carelessness of drivers here DAILY. Adding alcohol to that is a recipe for disaster. There have been many horrible crashes in NJ. It’s scary. *Edit: The driver apparently wasn’t drunk. That was just speculation. Just didn’t see them in the dark. Even more sad.

Man what a sick sick fucking world we live in. I’ve heard of way too many people close to me getting sick or dying this last week it just keeps piling on.
Hold your loved ones guys.

Absolutely sick to my stomach.
Literally no other words. Thoughts for his family, I cannot fathom losing two sons.

Absolutely sick after hearing about this

I live in Columbus. This is just awful news. This community lost Kivlenieks to that freak Fourth of July incident a few years back as well. Fuck man

Saw this buzzing over Twitter last night and absolutely prayed it wasn’t true. This is so heartbreaking for hockey as a whole. Johnny was such an anomaly in hockey for me as a shorter, smaller guy with such skill. I always thought you had to be a big guy to play, but he proved that entire thought wrong for me. He was such a pleasure to watch on the ice when he played against us. There is no amount of condolences I could give in a situation like this where it’s not only him, but also his brother. This event really encompasses the word “tragedy.”
Rest in power.

Heartbreaking. RIP and condolences to their family and friends

Absolutely tragic, RIP.
Reports mention driver who hit the Gaudreaus is suspected of driving under the influence. Absolutely ridiculous.

I always hoped to see him in an Isles uniform. So sad.

My entire emotional range right now is just anger. I’ve lost people to drunk drivers. I fucking hate this.
RIP to the brothers.

A gigantic heart, ferocious competitiveness, and incredible talent in a “too short to play in the NHL” 5’9” frame.
I know it’s non-islanders news but hockey is a small world. Anyone who played in the tri-state area or watched games in the tri-state area probably saw him dazzle when he was a Jr. Flyer.
On the day before the wedding of his sister, a family loses 2 sons, a daughter loses 2 brothers, and a city loses a champion. God bless Matthew and Johnny.
