What term should Leon Draisaitl target for his next contract? | Overdrive – Hour 2 – 8/29/24

Gord Miller, Frank Corrado and Jason Strudwick chat with NHL Network Analyst Jason Demers about the Sharks rebuild and what Leon Draisaitl’s next contract could look like, discuss whether Dak Prescott could get tired with the Cowboys negotiation tactics and move on from Dallas next year, and whether Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has proven he’s worthy of a long-term deal.

  1. 14 AAV for one year. After that, leon get a matching deal with mcdavid or if Connor leaves, then Leon leaves too

  2. Leon is turning 29 in a couple months when the season starts. So an 8 yr contract will cover him from age 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36 & 37 years old and a 37 year old making 15 million on his AAV is an absolute boat anchor for a team! Look at Tavares at 33 people are complaining at his $10M AAV as reason the team cannot be competitive. No chance I hell a team can survive what you guys are suggesting. PLUS the buyout is hell. They are still paying James Neal’s $7m deal.
In addition the Oilers are going to have to pay Bouchard as well.

    For comparison:

    McDavid: $100M over 8 years = $12.5M AAV
    Yr 1 & 2: $2M Salary & $13M Signing Bonus (SB)
    Yr 3: $1M Salary & $13M SB
    Yr 4: $1M Salary & $12M SB
    Yr 5: $1M Salary & $11M SB
    Yr 6: $1M Salary & $10M SB
    Yr 7-8: $3M Salary & $7M SB

    MacKinnon: $100.8M over 8 years = 12.6M AAV:
    Yr 1: $775K Salary & $15.725M SB
    Yr 2:$775K Salary & $15.725M SB
    Yr 3: $800K Salary & $15.25M SB
    Yr 4: $9.15M Salary & $3M SB
    Yr 5-8: $990K Salary & $9.9M SB

    Pastrnak: $90M over 8 years = $11.25M AAV
    Yr 1: $8.5M salary + $4.5M Signing Bonus (SB)
    Yr 2: $8.5M salary + $4.5M SB
    Yr 3 $8.5M salary + $4M SB
    Yr 4: $8.25M salary + $3M SB
    Yr 5: $8.25M salary + $3M SB
    Yr 6: $7.5M salary + $3M SB
    Yr 7: $7M salary + $2.5M SB
    Yr 8: $7M salary + $2M SB

  3. Draisaitl, McDavid and Bouchard will have to get together and agree on leaving some money on the table if they want to win a cup or two, and it will still be difficult. Especially with the $9.5M Nurse contract. They're really pretty fortunate to have a few guys already taking less than they could get elsewhere, such a huge plus these days. Kane's deal is great too, that's a bargain if he's back in form – guy you really want in the playoffs.
