RIP Johnny Gaudreau (1993-2024)

First of all, RIP to Johnny and Matthew. I cannot imagine the grief that this tragedy has brought to their family

How to describe Johnny? Fast, electric, unique, filthy. We as Kings fans had the pleasure (and the bad luck) to see Johnny Hockey play as a divisional rival for many years. The dread of playing the Flames knowing that Johnny Hockey was going to make the players look downright silly just shows how great he is despite the probable barriers he had to face as he wasn't exactly a big guy. He opened up the doors for many hockey players that you don't exactly have to be 6'4" and 220 lbs to get into the professional leagues.

I am so saddened by this news. What a horrible tragedy all around, and my condolences to the Gaudreau family. The whole hockey world is grieving. Thank you, Johnny, for making the sport so exciting and making me love hockey all over again.

Please share your memories, anecdotes in honor of Johnny.

  2. Fuck this (alleged) DUI driver!

May the Gaudreau family somehow, eventually find peace.

Condolences to the Guadreau family, I can only hope that they all get through this difficult time together.

Sisters wedding is today too. Should be a celebration, instead its a memorial. Drunk drivers are the worst

This is absolutely sickening, loved his style of play and skill. To get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, drugs, prescriptions is inexcusable. People can’t go out and have good old fashioned fun without worrying about shit like this. RIP Gaudreau brothers.

Absolutely tragic, was hoping the news yesterday was just a rumor when the story wasn’t confirmed. RIP Johnny. I can’t imagine the pain his family is going through.

Fuck drunk AND impatient drivers. But especially fuck drunk drivers

Two brothers on the eve of their sisters wedding. This is an unreal level of tragedy for the family. It’s also a tragedy for the sport, but that’s secondary. I was just watching a video yesterday about how Columbus brought in Monahan to play with Gaudreau.

  9. The most frustrating Kings game I attended was December 2014 at home against the Flames. Up 2 goals late, Johnny scored twice and we lost in OT. Such a tragic loss for his family and the game of hockey

so fucking sad, my god it’s hard to read

This guy was awesome to watch. Unbelievable tragedy for the family.

Loved watching Johnny Hockey play. These deaths that are just a loss for everyone are so sad. 🙁

    RIP Johnny Hockey.

Amazing player, amazing ambassador for USA and college hockey, and most importantly amazing family man.

    Absolutely devastating loss for hockey.

This will continue to happen until lawmakers take DUIs seriously. Its a slap on the wrist until you kill someone. There should be mandatory jail time for even a first offense. These people have ZERO regard for anyone other than themselves. Why should i have sympathy for them? 5 year’s minimum first offense. A decade for you to think on your second.

  15. uhg how horrible and sad..

He was a lot of fun to watch. He is the player I most associated the term “hockey IQ” to. He just seemed to anticipate what was going to happen more so then any other players I watched.

So sad. When I first heard the news I was like, “not Johnny Hockey, right? It can’t be.”

Just absolutely heartbreaking. He was so entertaining to watch, even if it was against your team. Prayers and condolences to the family.

  17. Ugh…terrible just devastating news…. I’m just thinking of how it was on the eve of their sister’s wedding and they were both groomsmen. My heart goes out to the family and friends.

Just awful, feel gutted for his family and friends

We need harsher dui laws like other countries.

I remember being in the chat here during the playoffs against the Flames years ago and Johnny Hockey was a point machine and absolutely killed us in that series. I’m admittedly a bit of a casual and don’t watch games as much a lot of people here but I know who the stars are and knew after that series that he was a star to keep tabs on. It’s so sad that he and his brother are gone at such a young age. My deepest condolences to the Gaudreau family.

Just so incredibly sad. Such a horrible situation for his and Matthews family.

I’m from Calgary so it hits close to home for sure, always was a fan of his and he’ll be remembered so fondly.

You hear corny shit like this all the time but in his case it was true: as special as he was as a player, he was equally if not more special as a human being.

We see that even in his eternal absence.

    Jersey.

    Philly.

    Boston.

    Calgary.

    Columbus.

Where he trode, or more aptly, glided, there is an enormous shadow cast today.

A friend of mine saw him just a week ago and said he was his usual ebullient self, of course. He had a lovely baby boy and a toddler. Matthew also had an infant son. Katie’s wedding was to be a joyous celebration, not a double funeral.

I had spent time around Johnny on a few occasions and he just emanated positivity. He didn’t need any forced gestures or exaggerated language, he was just him. Just being in a room with the guy made you feel at ease, at peace. What a light to extinguish. I’ve heard similar things about his brother from guys who played with him in the minors. Just horrific and absolutely fucking senseless.

•Look up at the night sky tonight.

•There amongst the cosmos you’ll find Johnny and Matthew shining – the brightest of stars.

•Say a prayer for their family. They are going to need all the support they can get tonight and in the difficult days ahead.

I literally came across a post here on Reddit last night with people wondering about his passing and was so shocked. Was hoping to wake up today and see that it was some kind of misunderstanding, and it wasn’t 🥺 I can’t even begin to imagine what his family must be feeling, so awful. Beyond being a great hockey player, he was so much more than that to all who knew and loved him. It’s all just so incredibly sad, and so senseless. That driver should be ashamed of himself.

May Johnny and his brother rest in peace…

Genuinely was in shock when I read the news this morning. I had to do a double take. This is just horrible, a life taken too soon. Condolences to his family
