I love this. 3 years ago when he arrived here I thought for sure he was gonna wear #13 like he did with team USA, was a bit surprised to see 22.

Nice gesture to honor Johnny, like Dubois did for Kivlenieks.

  2. It makes perfect sense, but its wild to think that Gaudreau was someone’s hockey hero. Im getting old.

This damn near brought a tear to my eye. Caufield is quickly becoming one of my favourite players.

pure class from Caufield here, I know Gaudreau would’ve wanted his legacy to carry on. beautiful stuff

  5. fitzdfitzgerald

Incredible gesture honouring an incredible person

  6. Honestly reads to me more like a permanent change from the caption. Great gesture from Caufield to honor one of his heroes.

  7. Leafyboy34

Huge year for the guy coming too. Absolutely love this from Cole.

Every NHL team should hold a Gaudreau Night at home this year. All players wear either Johnny or Matty’s number.

  9. BlackWhiteVike

Damn as a leafs fan, that’s absolutely sweet to hear

  10. cheezefriez

I’m gonna cry man this is such a beautiful gesture. Love Cole so much

Stick taps for Caufield to commemorate like this. I wondered if anyone from the Wings might feel personally close enough to the situation to do something like this, but #13 is unofficially unavailable in Detroit, I think..

Instant top 5 player that doesn’t play for my team.

Damnnn gonna have to get one of those…

Oh fuck it’s heavy. I think I have a lot more tears left in me for this, opening nights around the league are going to be crushing.

What an amazing gesture from Cole.

Those posts he made on Friday were heartbreaking and hopefully not only does this bring the family some peace but him as well.

  16. Such a beautiful gesture and beautiful words from Caufield.

I love hearing how many people have individual stories about Johnny. It’s so unfair that someone so full of life is gone.

  17. moxieplum

Wow. What a powerful and moving tribute. Cole, I wasn’t familiar with your game!

  18. Electronic_Nail

I love this and I hope that other players will follow

Not to detract from the main conversation but good god those fanatics jerseys look awful.

  20. Snoopy_021

I had read the Instagram post by Caufield in regards to the number change. If you are going to read it, you will need a big box of tissues.

    100% Respect.

After Marty St Louis retired, I can’t think of a more impactful small player than Gaudreau. He came into the league 10 years ago so it’s wild to think guys like Caufield were young teenagers watching him play.

Every time I think I’m out of tears, another flood rolls in.

  23. Separate_Pound_753

Love that! He used to wear 13 aswell at some point, as Johnny was his hockey hero. 🥺

  24. judica_me_deus

I hope cole pots 50 wearing 13. Maybe 75 assists is more fitting to honor Johnny. Either way

  25. I love this guy, my favourite player on the habs. classy move, Caufield. you have even more of my admiration

  26. Zestyclose-Cricket82

Beautiful tribute, love it. Guess my dusty Cammalleri jersey about to get a rebrand

  27. ZacJonesIsAwesome

Really great post and awesome tribute from Cole. He has a way with words.

Johnny Hockey inspired so many people. Just a huge loss for the community and of course his loved ones

  28. okdarkrainbows

    Cool move.

Anyone wants to buy a Caufield #22 jersey?

  29. iwatchtoomuchsports

I really want a caufield jersey but you couldnt catch me dead in a habs jersey

  30. ViolinistMean199

Honestly I don’t think GMs give Cole the shot he’s had if it wasn’t for guys like Theo, St Louis and Gaudreau showing that you don’t need to be 6’ or taller to produce at an elite level

Respect to Cole on this one. I did same when Demitra died and switch my number in all sports to 38. Those 2010 Olympics were incredible

  31. Some day I will come to terms with this but it still doesn’t feel real. I have my own personal feelings and theories but why the hell does this one hurt so bad….
