Are you surprised at Leon Draisaitl’s new contract? | Jay on SC

Leon Draisaitl has been one of the most consistent scorers in the NHL over the last four seasons, sitting second in points and goals over that period. TSN Oilers reporter Ryan Rishaug joins SC with Jay Onrait to explain why the average annual value of $14 million over eight years makes sense for both sides to help the Oilers make more necessary moves and paves the way to lock up Connor McDavid when the time comes.

  1. Took a paycut on his first big contract, definitely deserves this contract. Most importantly he's a beast in the playoffs, and he's one of the best players in the world.

  2. His playoff production is amazing! If I was a GM I would never sign a high end player that didn’t produce in the playofffs. Huberdeau or even Eberle, when we let him go. Drai earned every penny, not only in the regular season, but consistent playoff performances.

  3. Considering it's his last chance to earn a big contract with a year left on his $8 million he deserves every penny, he earned it. And I do not begrudge him finally getting his payday.

  4. wow a lot of you have a short memory, 8 years ago everyone was freaking out he got signed for 8.5k and the comments back then were they can't win with two playing making that much money, good luck you will eat that contract. Back then he was the 10th highest paid player starting in 2017/2018. Since 2017 he is the second highest in points with 790 points. Played the most games since 2017 out of anyone in the top 25 point getters. This contract is a great deal for both the player and the team and again years from now you will be looking at this contract as a value deal just like everyone is saying now about his 8.5 million for the second best player in the league.
