The Florida Panthers reached the peak of the NHL this past season…and one of the biggest reasons why, was because of their captain Aleksander Barkov. We take a deep dive into his game & how he was able to shut down Connor McDavid in the most important games of the stanley cup final.

Check out Some Great Barkov breakdowns here from Darryl Belfry & Dimitri Filipovic of the PDOcast

  1. There was only one guy who carried that team and it wasn't Barkov. Big bad Bobroski is the only reason FL got past Boston twice.

  2. Barkov is like mellow Peter Forsberg. I think it starts to show that he has been putting in the hours off season.

  3. This is exactly why he deserved to lift that cup at least once in his career. And he’s such a good dude on top of it.

  4. Rangers lost by 1 goal games in the ECF and I was pissed….however, Barkov WAS the difference. Excellent video! 🚨

  5. In you example of Barkiv "cheating" youll notice he always kept his eye on the play so his transition back to defense was effortless to get back into position. Both McDavid and McKinnon had completely turned their backs on the play and were well out of position and outside of theor own zone.

    A huge difference.

  6. You know what they say. Wanna win, pick a finn. Personally not a huge Barkov fan, but he has done an exceptional job.

  7. Don't shine light over him! You miss the main reason why he is great. Like an assassin he works under shadows.

  8. HP, the way you use video examples to break down the nuanced execution within the strategies employed by players in this league is almost as effective as Barkov's two-way F3 positioning. Almost.

  9. Amazing breakdown!! Barkov is a underrated player in the league like you covered but maybe a two way center is a even more underrated weapon in hockey nowadays!

  10. Panthers are so hard to play against. They agitate the opponent as well as stifle them. No team initiates a more aggressive response from their foes than Florida.

  11. Barky still has like 5 years to improve, he aint no speedster, but everything else he does is great which I think well bodes with his play. Hes a threat with a frame that can just push you away and saying gently its my game now while winning Selkes and Lady Byngs.

  12. A lot of folks balk at the +/- stat, but it is a measure of how a player can contribute. He was +33, while the team was +68 in goals. He had close to half those + in numbers(doesn’t mean he was on ice for all the goals differential, but it is an indicator).

+/- is an overlooked stat, imo. Don’t get me wrong, you could be shit on a good team and have a good +/-, but if you are a consistent player with regular production, your +/- is going to show a large ratio of your team’s goals differential.

  13. It is not about how many points Barkov makes, but how many points he takes away from opponents best players.

  14. Barkov shows that the best and complete hockey player on the planet isn't necessarily the one who makes the most points. It's Barkov.

  15. youtube.com/@hockeypsychology It is Crazy how your videos during the off-season fuel me for the regular season and then sustain me throughout the post-season! Players who play against him all year and fans who watch the Panthers all year understand how special he is. Thank you for showcasing Sasha Barkov!

  16. Barkov plays the Finnish style. Finland doesn't have super star goal makers as much as other countries, but we play for the gold in world championships always because we play as a team. Tight defense, smart offence. This is how players are trained in Finland.
