Should the Carolina Hurricanes Offer Sheet Nick Robertson? | Carolina Hurricanes Podcast

It’s a Saturday Edition of Locked On Hurricanes as we take a look at how the Carolina Hurricanes could make use of the offer sheets that have been a hot topic during the 2024 offseason. Is it possible for the Canes to go after Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nick Robertson? What could that entail and what does it mean if they go down that road?

  1. I count, among offer sheets made for players then on Canadian NHL teams, if made in the:
    – 1980s, 3
    – 1990s, 10
    – pre-2010 2000s, 2
    – 2010s, none
    – 2020s, so far 3 (respective offer sheets presented to Jesperi Kotkanemi [Habs to Canes in 2021 offseason], Phil Broberg and Dylan Holloway [from Oilers to Blues in each of the last 2 cases, earlier this summer])

Of overall offer sheets signed by players across the NHL (from a Wikipedia article titled "List of NHL players who have signed offer sheets") I count, of those made in the:
    – 1980s, 4
    – 1990s, 28
    – pre-2010 2000s (all following the 2004-05 lockout), 5
    – 2010s, 4
    – 2020s, so far just 3

In a nutshell I count, during the 1990s, more offer sheets made to players:
    – then based on Canadian teams (10) than the combined # of offer sheets so far made during other decades (8 [5 of them following the 1990s])
    – on no matter what NHL team (28) than the combined # of offer sheets so far made during other decades

I don't see the Canes having too much (if ANY) competition from other non-Leafs NHL teams in the offer-sheet-to-Nick-Robertson department should they choose to offer sheet him. Whether the Canes will give Robertson an offer sheet still remains TBD.

  2. Very logical approach – although Robertson would make the Canes softer. The Leafs can't match any offer over 1 million. So 1.5 and a 3rd is a lock to get him,

  3. Toronto has no clue what they got in Robertson by offering 800k for a top line player that is a 40 goal scorer. If he is not value then trade him for a 5th rounder or release him. Please free him so we can see him explode with another team.

  4. I mean hey it is worth a shot offer sheet at 1.5 million and see what happens I would not go above that though . We need another Scorer granted Robertson does have some inconsistency in his game but again the guy got only 10 mins of average ice time last season and the Leafs are misusing him at least to me. Limited penalties guy to still has good upside to which is a plus, injury concerns worry mean but at this point we need another scorer badly on the second line. O

Agreed with the vide Fast to IR and Jost to the AHL / Minors could create enough cap to bring in Robertson if we offer $1.5 million.

Could slot into the second line LW spot that is currently up for grabs

    1-Svech/ Aho/ Jarvis
    2-Robertson/ KK / Necas
    3-Martinook/ Staal / Roslovic
    4-Carrier / Drury / Robinson

    healthy scratch : Lemieux

To me it is all about Nadeau"s development and timeline for being LW of the future !! Defense will be fine with S. Morrow & Nikishin (hopefully finally comes to the States late in 2024 / 2025) and both of those guys can hopefully take on the vacant spot left by Orlov & Burns who as mentioned are UFA after this year and honestly neither are going to be resigned . Also we could create more space with a KK buyout (no one is trading for him lol only way happens is bad contract for bad contract swap) I believe it was quoted for $853 k over ten years to buyout KK so if he faulters again this year that maybe our only course of action moving into 25 season regarding his $4.8 milion dollar cap hit. 25 defense doesn't look bad at all and honestly very cost affordable w/ as the vid mention Burns, Orlov, and Anderson all off the books next season to the tune of $16.43 million aka we will have plenty of cap to do whatever we want to regarding new contracts, trades, UFA's , RFA's .

    2025 Defense Lines (Potentially)

    1-Slavin / Walker
    2-Nikishin/ Morrow
    3-Ghost / Chatfield

Even if Nikishin doesn't make it to the States Ghost can play top four mins and all we need is someone to play with Chatfield a third pairing LHD .
