Hockey is a team sport. These big signings paralyze a team. Chicago never won after the big contracts to Toews and Kane. Colorado is sliding because of MacKinnon and Makar. Toronto is a joke. Has a player won the Cup making more than $10 M in the cap era?

Look at the post-lockout salaries. There where many players almost right at the 20% max: Jagr, Briere, Vanek, Lidström etc
It's expected the salary cap will be at $100 million when McDavid's extension would kick in. My expectation is that he will be at the maximum, be it $19 or $20 million, but some of it will be deferred to get him down to $16 million aav. If he's at $16 aav, with Draisaitl at $14, they're at 30%. They were at 28% of the cap combined when they signed their last deals.

Matthews could have got what he got for 8 years… since he signed 4…. are you giving him that kind of deal after 33 years old ?? I guess it depends on cap and productivity… but pretty bold gamble.
Nice for Leon….who did took "a bird in hand" instead of oping for UFA I'd be concerned about signing a player to eight year contract which starts at the. age of 30. I know Oiler fans are happy, but really it's paying the same player (or worse) 5.5m more which doesn't really help the cap. Not sure how McDavid's new contract will fit in. IMO McDavid will seriously look at UFA.
They're screwed as long as no other team takes on Nurse's contract…. PLEASE NHL GMs DON'T SAVE THE OILERS FROM CAP HELL. Draisaitl at $14m, Bouchard at $10m, McDavid's next contract easily $15m+…… If they still have Nurse at $9.25m, they're completely cooked.
11:30 -Talking about how Connor signed at such a discount at 12.5 years ago when in the last few sentences you just stated how ridiculous it was to think Draisaitl's contract was a discount at 14 is so ironic. Open market he's getting 16. You just don't know that yet because you're constantly judging future salaries based on past precedents. Case in point, you probably thinking McDavid's salary is crazy when he signs it and so low when you look at it today.

I’m with Jesse. Anyone who tries to compare Leafs and Oilers with the core 4 is out of lunch. Look at the leafs. They are great team every regular season even with the pricy core 4. The problem is the core dips every PO. That isn’t an issue in EDM. Yes, Nurse is overpaid we all know that. But 97, 29 & 2 are worth every penny in both RG & PO. And I’m not saying handling the cap space will be easy. It definitely won’t. But it still ain’t the same as the Leafs. Also there is another reason of the cap problems of the Leafs… the dead cap years bc of covid and unless there is another pandemic on the horizon I don’t see the same issue for the Oilers
You guys really need to give up covering teams that aren't the leafs because you're really bad and unprofessional at it. Draisaitl's cap hit is 14m not 14.4m, the 2023 stanley cup final went to 5 games not 7. It's difficult to have any faith in your guys opinions when you get the simple things wrong

Comparing the oilers paying this amount to 4 players compared to the leafs proves how brain rot leafs fans can be. The oilers pay the two BEST modern era playoff performers this money, the leafs pay dudes who have a combined 20 points in 7 years
