Notes from the first day of Rookie Camp

[Mercogliano] The rookie line out first for the NYR features Berard, Korczak and Othmann. Berard is rocking the full face shield and scores on Dylan Garand here. They’ve got the new Fanatics practice jerseys on.

[Mercogliano] Lots of big boys out here for the NYR. 15 players who are 6-2 or taller, by my count. Eight of them are 6-4 or taller. Biggest line I’ve seen is Chmelař (6-4), Roobroeck (6-7) and Edström (6-7).

[Walker] Adam Sýkora plays so much bigger than his size, the kid is fearless and attacks every challenge head on.

[Mercogliano] Brennan Othmann just told us he weighed in at 192 pounds this week, which is a new high for him. Up from 186 last season. He called it “corner weight” lol.

[Walker] Dylan Garand just told such a cute story from when he dressed for #NYR that one game last season: When he was out at the red line during warmups, Marc-André Fleury came out, skated up to him, said ‘hi’ and skated away. “It was so cool… at first, I was like, ‘holy smokes.’”

[Walker] How will that 3-game taste of the NHL last season influence Brennan Othmann? “I think knowing that I can do it, being able to play at that level and that pace, knowing that I can play at that capacity, I think. Play with the players there. I can handle myself.”
