The Great 2nd Line Debate

Today, we’re going to talk about one of the hottest debates in the Montreal Canadiens’ fanbase: who should fill the second line spot for the team? With a mix of new faces and returning stars, the competition is interesting, I’m not going to say fierce – it’s more weird and uncertain than fierce I’d say. But an unlikely hero might emerge from the shadowy place that is beyond the borders of a 30 goal season. Let’s talk about it.
As the Canadiens gear up for the season, the second line is shaping up to be a crucial part of their success. The second line is often where the team balances skill and depth, providing key contributions in both offensive and defensive situations. We’re all aware the team is in a rebuild, that term has become such a part of the vernacular when talking about the Montreal Canadiens you’d think the rebuild has been in motion since 2018, which some people say technically, it has. So what are expectations for the 2nd line in what I would say is year 3 of the rebuild? Well – there are still going to be a lot of uncertainties and with the addition of Patrik Laine we’re seeing some calculated risks being added to the equation. In addition to risks and uncertainties I think there are opportunities for individuals to step up or for individuals to prove themselves. So who are the candidates, and what shows up on their resume?

  1. Let me know your thoughts about who should fill out the 2nd line! Are you excited for the season? What are you most excited about?

  2. Slaf – Suzuki – Caufield

    Roy – Dach – Laine

Roy’s solid 2 way and playmaking would be good with Laine and Dach

    Newhook – Evans – Anderson

would be a fast solid 3rd line
I would rather see Beck in lind up at 3 or 4 C than DVO but that time may be soon approaching

    Armia – DVO – Gallagher
most expensive 4th line in the NHL but maybe one of the best

great defensive 2 way line that can still score

Anderson is a outside driving, crashing the net, shooting he is not a drive and pass, I’d rather see him use his speed with Newhook and Evans solid scoring checking line

  3. Suzuki and Dach are the 1/2 centers.
Newhook just played center because both Dach and Dvorak were injured last year.
My guess is Suzuki and Slaf are now pairs as will be Dach and Newhook. Then MSL will have to decide where CC and Laine pair up.

  4. The only discussion is about who will play with Dach and Laine.

Assuming a full healthy roster it'll be a competition between Newhook and Roy. No one else makes sense.
