Marek Zagrapan was drafted 13th overall in 2005 and he didn’t play a single game in the NHL. He’s a way bigger bust than Grigorenko.

Marek Zagrapan comes to mind, but it has to be Grigorenko in my lifetime. I remember thinking we had no1 & 2 center down for a decade plus after drafting “Grigs and Girgs”… Girgensons turned out to be a fine pick at 14, Grigorenko at 12 – not so much.

Why over Nylander or Grigorenko? Nylander was moved for a quality NHL defenseman and has 49 points in 121 NHL games. Similarly Grigorenko has 76 in 249 games. While neither panned out for Buffalo, they did have some success elsewhere. It’s like saying Joel Armia was a bust, he had a solid career elsewhere.
Marek never sniffed the NHL.
Honorable mention to Artyom Kryukov, drafted 15th overall in 2000, never even came to the states to play. He’s still playing and Buffalo still retains his rights to this day.

It’s absolutely Marek Zagrapan and if you think it’s a guy who played in the NHL for parts of six years and is still very productive in the KHL over him, that’s frankly silly.

People call Grigorenko our biggest bust, but our franchise got fine value out of him. He was the biggest piece of the O’Reilly trade. Same with Nylander. We bottom a solid bottom 4 guy out of him. Not great at all, but hardly the biggest bust in franchise history. If we would have doubled down and held, sure.
Unconventional a little but Luke Adam. Wasn’t a high draft pick, but after going over ppg his first AHL season, damn was I hyped.

I vote for the back to back Marek Zagrapen/Dennis Persson combo.
Everyone blames Briere/Drury for the collapse of the competitive sabres, but blowing the draft so badly in 2005/2006/2007 is why a team with a solid number of good players and a star goalie couldn’t retool.
